Looking forward to it, although it doesn't seem to follow the graphic novel at all.

^its supposed to take place ~10 years after the events of the graphic novel. Jeremy Irons is an older Ozymandias.

^Oh okay, that makes a little more sense then. I guess we have an army of vigilantes who saw Rorschach as a martyr of sorts. I'm wondering if his journal actually was published by the newspaper, in which case the alliance between the USA and USSR may have ended.

Yeah from the trailer it suddenly occurred to me that this could be a sequel. Maybe that's always been known or obvious....I haven't followed this thing at all in development because I assumed it was a straight up adaptation.

If it's a sequel I'm suddenly VERY interested...

I don’t know anything about the watchmen universe but I thought that was awesome.

Lots of little touches in the world they created that you don’t always see in alternative universe shows.

So then. I remember reading that it might be a "remix" rather than a direct sequel, but this definitely appears to be a direct sequel.

I loved that premiere. The tone was right, the pacing was crisp, the characters aren't dull, the effects are movie-calibre, and there was just enough parallel imagery (like the ending blood drop onto the [xxxx] instead of the smiley face) to suck me back into that mood that the original book puts you in.

^Did you notice when the main hero/detective lady was talking to the class about baking and she put the egg yolks into the bowl? The yolks were in the shape of a smiley face and the top left egg had a drop of blood on it too. Nice little nod there too. I agree that so far it does seem like a direct sequel as there were a lot of references to the graphic novel.

Lots of questions, but I'm sure they'll be answered. I'm wondering if we'll see any of the original heroes in costume -- since this is set in modern day, they'd be ~30 yrs older now so prob not out fighting crime anymore.

^^I meant in actual costume/fighting crime. It is implied that the old guy in the wheelchair was a hero (and HJ was the first of the heroes in the graphic novel I think), so his age would be about right. I guess the original Nite Owl passed down his moniker to the second Nite Owl, so that second one could potentially have passed his down to a third person.

It’s Damon Lindelof, I wouldn’t be so sure.

But I thought it was great, and can’t wait to see more. Between this, His Dark Materials, and The Outsider, HBO looks like they will be doing pretty good post GOT

Between this being super freaking weird, and that it's Lindelof, really makes me hesitate to continue watching any further (after S2)

^Seems fairly obvious.

Any theories on what is going on with Jeremy Irons’ character? I thought at first he was Adrian Veidt but a newspaper headline in E1 said he was dead. Did he fake his own death? Is this all in his head? Is it Dr. Manhattan just messing around on Mars? What is with the multiple clones of the butler and maid?

How do you know? Or is he just listed as him in the credits and I wasn't paying attention?

So clearly he isn't dead after all.

Read that the showrunners call him "Probably Who You Think He Is." Inside the show you'd have no idea...but following the meta, yes, he is Ozy.

I actually did like it. I don't see why it got so much hate, it was honestly almost scene for scene a remake of the graphic novel aside from a few specific things such as the bombs vs. squid (which kind of makes sense in some cases).

The captions accidentally identified him as Ozymandias, so the "secret" is out.

I read two different theories after episode 2. First was that Ozy is trying to create a new Dr. Manhatten. Second was that Dr. Manhatten has already been seen as a human, potentially one of Ozy's staff.

Was it ever supposed to be a secret? It was reported that’s who he was playing almost a year ago, and he’s listed on IMDB as Adrian Veidt, which is Ozy’s real name. Or had they just not said his name specifically in the show yet?

Will I like this series if i didnt like the movie and never read the comics?

^i think it may be a little hard to follow/understand if you didn’t read the comic, but I think you can still like it if you didn’t like the movie. If you watched and liked The Leftovers, id say you’d like this, it has a similar feel in my opinion

Something related to heat resistance? Or was I watching too closely....

They haven't said his name on the show at all. The only people he has interacted with are the various clones/robots/whatever they are of the butler and the maid, and they always refer to him as "Master". I haven't followed any of the show outside of the trailers they had leading up to it, so I didn't know that's who he was. So now there is a question of why did he fake his death? Or at least, why does the world think he is dead?

Wyloch you may be reading in to it too much. As far as we know, the only person with actual definite super powers in the Watchmen universe is Dr. Manhattan. All of the other heroes are just in very good physical condition and are good at fighting. The closest anyone has ever even come is Ozymandias being super intelligent and catching a bullet one time, but even those things are plausible for a non powered human.

The world thinks he's dead because he's been MIA since the Veidt corporation was acquired. He was declared dead according to the headline we saw. Think Bruce Wayne after he left Gotham.

This show is so good.

Really interesting to see the aftermath of the squid attack and how messed up the survivors were. I'm wondering how Looking Glass actually survived or if he just happened to be really lucky.

Given the demonstrations of teleportation that the 7th Calvary were doing, it's making me think that someone has created a pocket dimension on one of Jupiter's moons, and that they have teleported Viedt there. Still a question as to who the game warden is and what the deal with all those clones are.

Agree - this show is fantastic.

Funny anecdote.

My wife is not a geek. Knows NOTHING about the Watchmen franchise whatsoever. I have been watching this show myself, but last night we watched episode 5 together.

So imagine a person with ZERO background watching the "previously on" segment before the show...the look on her face was like What. The. Hell.

I was thinking about Looking Glass as an interrogator and his "pod". He can tell instantly if someone is lying, even when he was talking to that lady in the bar. I'm wondering if the squid attack somehow gave him this as a minor super power. It was a psychic attack, afterall. He can't tell if someone is hiding something, as he would have immediately known she was 7th Calvary, but it seems like if is a discrete verbal spoken statement, he just knows.

Admittedly, there are probably actual real life interrogators that can tell if someone is lying, but that is usually associated with a physical tell of some kind and probably requires some kind of initial observation.

So, they've not explicitly addressed Rorschach's journal - the end of the book implied that it got published, but if it did, no one appears to have taken it seriously.

But the fact that Veidt's big recording reveal to Glass were a total surprise to him (Glass) seems to imply it was never published.

^Well think about it this way: Rorschach was clearly very mentally unstable. He went from being a legitimate hero to a borderline psychopath fueled by anger and vengeance. Chaotic good in the clearest sense. Even after superheroes were outlawed, he regularly killed people and beat the shit out of police. Even if it wasn't a repressive government that was heavily censoring things, anything he said that was even remotely outlandish would have been seen as the ramblings of a madman.

So one day, a handwritten journal with his name on it shows up in a newspaper office. Claiming that the largest attack on anyone in history was a conspiracy by Adrian Veidt (who at that point is seen as the smartest man alive, billionaire philanthropist, ex-superhero, and all around "good" guy).

This would be the equivalent of the Unabomber claiming that Bill Gates single-handedly was responsible for 9/11. I'm sure there are conspiracy theorists that would make all sorts of claims, but they, like the 7th Calvary, would just be seen as an extremist group.

The only people that could even backup Rorschach's journal would be Nite Owl, Silk Spectre, and Dr. Manhattan. Nite Owl and Silk Spectre, although they don't like it, know that it was necessary so they likely aren't talking, and Dr. Manhattan just doesn't care.
