19 point spread. I think we cover. I’ll say 38-14

I have a crazy idea! If we jump out to an early lead on the Cardinals, maybe get Hockman in for some reps with the first team. I know it's crazy, but what's the point of tune-up games if players aren't allowed to get some D-1 experience?

I think you see Hockman finish this game and start FSU

i don't really disagree...but couldn't you argue that those reps are just as important for mckay to improve and gain experience? like, if the coaches are sold on mckay because they've seen in practice he's simply better than hockman or leary, aren't those reps just as valuable to mckay as we head into acc season?

I agree, but we need Hockman to at least show he can throw the ball. How long til the boo birdds come out when Matthew cant make a pass or overthrows someone.

i'm still on the fence with changing but I think Hockman needs extended game time against someone other than our shitty defense.

I haven’t been overly impressed with McKay, obviously. I guess I just put more faith in the staff, that sees these guys practice and know what they are and are not capable of. But yeah, getting Hockman game reps that isn’t mop up duty isn’t a bad idea.

Then at least we know, and that this is one of those years and pray Finley is good.

I didn't say it, but it was implied by my post that Hockman could have gotten some reps against WCU. The coaches must see a big difference between the 2 in practice...
It could also be a case of Doeren not wanting to expose the whole playbook until ACC play, thus getting McKay really familiar with the offense, but that's a stretch considering our vanilla play calling.

But *we* don’t need to know it. The staff is who needs to know it. And they may already know that

Guys, McKay has only played 3 college games, and only one meaningful one. He's probably going to get a least a little better.

If it’s really close or even kinda close, then yeah I’m all for letting Hockman or Leary get real game reps. But if the staff is really sure that McKay is the guy best suited to run the O, then it’s better that he get those extra reps. I guess it really comes down to how close the QB competition was or still is.

^yeah I agree. I think its normal to have growing pains when breaking in a new QB...and new OCs.

Doeren has shown no interest in giving backup qbs game reps in his career

McKay had 8 attempts last year, 3 for mclendon the year before, trend continues....

Yeah the problem is he has a long way to go to get to even average P5 QB play

He had the worst QBR in the ACC before the West Virginia game

Tommy DeVito has a worse rating.

(By every rating metric except ESPN's dumbass total qbr)

You are going to win this game, play Hockman and Leary the whole game. See what they've got. McKay is not going to instantly develop touch and accuracy nor is he is going to quickly get better. He also eyes down his receiver and telegraphs passes, these aren't quick fixes. Looking at a 6-6 season if he is the best we got.

[Edited on September 21, 2019 at 9:51 AM. Reason : It's not like he's earned the full time gig]

Leary isn't seeing the field this season barring some catastrophic injuries.

It's pretty clear the coaches think he has.

I don’t think there’s a football coach in the nation that would agree with that philosophy.

^ yea, McKay is the starter. That doesn’t mean there’s no more competition and nothing is really set in stone. But the coaches see them everyday. If they think it’s McKay’s job and it’s not *that* close...then I trust them. I don’t personally need to see Hockman or Leary.

Do nothing but 45 yard bomb passes. The whole game. Until McKay figures them out

Hockman replaced McKay. Got a first down with his legs, threw a nice pass that wasn't caught by the receiver and ended up in a turnover. Ball State looks like the better team thus far.

That was a good throw by Hockman. Wouldn’t have been an INT if McKay was in though because the ball would have landed in Hillsborough

^ It was a nice pass, that wasn't on Hockman. Would like to see him get a couple of more series in to pass a verdict.

It wasn't a bad throw, wouldn't say it was a good one though.

I've seen enough that I'd like to see more. Ultimately, we're probably talking Matt Moore vs Jimmy Clausen (in a world where you don't get Cam Newton for playing the bad one more), so give me Matt Moore

I know the "Thayer Thomas is our best QB" thing was a joke, but he throws a pretty nice ball

[Edited on September 21, 2019 at 8:04 PM. Reason : ^it was behind the receiver, which is how it got popped up. shouldnt be an INT, but not perfect]

Guess I didn’t notice it was behind him. I didn’t say it was perfect. Honesty, I’d rather just concede the point than try to qualify every post and statement to avoid arguments over semantics. It was a good throw. Should have been caught. You knew what I meant. Now do you want to talk about the game or nitpick over semantics? Aren’t we all in our 30s now? Goddamn

There is no excuse this time. It is an epidemic. Playing on a neutral field just doesn't compare as a player. Of course you can't finish strong. I want more than two home games per year. A lot of restaurants have a penalty for leaving food on the plate and I would be interested in hearing about something similar for making people watch the whole game.
