How has it changed since we were young? It is on a Tuesday this year. Whats the latest time to get candy? Is today the main celebration day or what?

We're going trick or treating around the neighborhood on Tuesday night. The 1.5-year-old probably won't make it past about 4 houses, but the older ones will hit up a bunch of houses.

Just carved jack-o-lanterns today, and got costumes figured out.

No one puts razor blades or drugs in candy anymore

when my 22 year old daughter was little, her mom's neighborhood was like every house with the light on.

last year was my 14 year old's last year, and that neighborhood was like maybe 5 or 6 houses

Like special halloween lights? Or you mean only 5-6 gave out candy?

With the exception of 3 years, my friend has had a Halloween party every year since 2007. This year was fun, but the crowd was smaller and it was pretty mellow in comparison to when we were in our 20's and early 30's.

only a few had decorations and gave out candy, when it used to be pretty much everyone

the world it seems, has moved on.

huh. must be full of old sods

I've visited various "villages" and neighborhoods with people and even the richer ones, I don't really like them. Like the design of the place, just feels like its so off putting.

Nowadays with the constructors building entire places the same, makes it worse

can't believe less than 100% of people are handing out candy on some random night before Halloween

haha.

Yeah I'm not giving out a damned thing until after dark on the 31st of October. Get out of here with this weak shit, picking nights that aren't Halloween, or going out in the fucking daylight because little Timmy has to be asleep by dinnertime.

People who give out candy turn on their porch light. People who do not keep theirs off to discourage people from knocking.

I haven't trick or treated in a solid while but as a kid remember going to all houses anyhow
maybe all the lights were on? everyone had kids as I remember it

lol. once some random dude opened the door who had no idea what was going on, looked a bit out of it. we asked for candy, he went to his fridge, grabbed whatever was in there and handed it to us. I think it was like a packet of some minis, some random bar too, some other stuff
amusing

just play ding dong ditch with the lights off houses I guess

Right, so when I was a kid, the whole point of trick or treat was that if you don't pass out a treat, then you get tricked. As in some kind of minor prank or something. Regardless of whether or not a porch light was on. My friends and I would have a bag full of water balloons and we'd throw them on the walkway leading to the house, so pretty harmless, but we thought we were little badasses. The bigger kids would egg people's houses. That seems to have completely disappeared with the porch light being on or not though.

Anyway, trunk or treat bullshit has ruined a lot of it. They do it on the weekend before Halloween and the kids just go to a church parking lot and thats it. Why not do that and trick or treat? You get more sweets that way? But a lot of parents are too overprotective of their kids.

Unfortunately my house is in a hilly neighborhood at the end of a dead-end street with houses far apart, so I last year I only got one group of trick or treaters and that was it. The year before I got zero. I always get king size chocolate bars to hand out to the ones that do make the trek. Kinda sucks though, I love Halloween and the kids are always excited when I recognize their obscure nerdy costumes.

You should show up to random trunk or treat events in a cargo van and hand out candy to children

if halloween is in the middle of the week like this year...

usually will have trunk or treat events Friday/Saturday during the day, costume parties at night saturday/sunday, and trick or treating on the day of Halloween from about 5:15-5:30-ish till around 8:30-9:00 PM

if halloween is on a weekend, anything goes. it's time to get weird.

I'm at the end of a cul-de-sac with a similar issue. we usually have a street party at the house closest to the entrance and let the kids all get the whole street in one pass. a firepit and some booze helps pass the time and it's a nice landing spot after going trick or treating with the kids.

We've tricked and/or treated in this neighborhood since COVID, but we also went to a trunk or treat thing last night.

The kids ended up getting a lot of candy, but it felt kinda weird and artificial and less fun (not that trick or treating at houses is natural either, but still).

Also, when we were about to walk back to our house, some kid ran up and warned me that walking was dangerous (it's not, where we were).

Aren't most kidnappings done by their own parents in cases of divorce?
1 kid out of a million gets ransomed and we penalize 999,999.

I hate this so much and I'm glad it wasn't a thing I experienced. My memory is a bit shot so I brought this up to a friend from back then and yeah, I think it was kids from like 1-7 (with parents) who started around 5/6 and then older kids would start coming around night time, till around 9:30 maybe.
no set times, just authentic halloween!

I really have no words.

I feel like the kids who would've been made fun of (not that they should, I used to befriend these guys too), 10 years ago are gonna become the norm if we keep going this route

it reminds me of 22 jump street
with the woke bullies or whatever lmao

okay

Classic Virginia moment
you think a traffic cop will pull over the cop going to arrest the trick or treater?

fuck Virginia and their stupid laws. Virginia sucks. They also have ridiculously harsh traffic laws and overly aggressive enforcement.
