I'm considering one of these. What do you all think?

Not interested in a Tacoma and not interested in a Jeep Gladiator.

You talking 2023 frontier vs 2023 Ranger or 2023/2024 Frontier vs the brand spanking new 2024 Ranger?

Unless you get a screaming deal on a ‘23 Ranger then I think the ‘23 frontier is likely To beat it in price and interior features.

If it’s new ‘24 Ranger, you are just going to be dealing with the same Ford delivery bullshit you dealt with the Maverick. Putting money down while waiting for manufacture and delivery and wondering if the dealership is gonna fuck you with markup. In the meantime I bet you could drive a ‘24 Frontier off the lot this December at msrp or less. That’s speculation on my part but you should hear the conversations I’ve had with my Nissan dealership regarding my POS 2018 Frontier and they are trying to get me into a new frontier or Titan. They’re desperate AF.

I still have and love the Maverick.

We love it so much that my wife won't ever let me drive it.

I want something with 4x4.

My sister tried to sell her fresh-off-her-lease Mazda3 ~2 years ago, and it was pretty hard to get any interest in it.

I chalked it up to:
1. 99% of people in the market for a Mazda3 would finance
2. They want to finance through a dealer (all-in-one experience)
2. people will trust a dealership car over a private party car

Try it out but be prepared to sit on it a while.

I just sold this hot 2010 3 with 109k on it for $5,700. ($6,000 - $300 consignment fee)
Sat on the lot for only 6 days. You can do it!

What kind of hit do you take going dealership route vs private party? Like is it literally difference in kbb? More? Less?

You need to do a time vs money evaluation and figure out how much your time is worth.
Selling private party will almost always net you more money in your pocket. Are you a good negotiator? Do you have some backbone? These are important questions to ask ones self when selling private party. People are going to low ball you. People may waste your time. Would you hold onto your car for 2 months if the right buyer would come along and give you asking price? How do you feel about your car's condition? Do you feel like it is in pristine condition? Is it wearing out and you're getting tired of it?
Dealers don't really give a fuck about you and are in the business of making money. Unless there's a pandemic going on, they're going to give you a lower trade in value than you can make private party. However, dealer transactions can be beneficial for both parties. Ultimately, most dealers operate within a huge network. If you bring them a POS for trade, they'll still likely use their connections to make a few hundred $ on it. They like to say they operate on volume.
Let's say you have a $5,000 ish Oldsmobile to sell. Private party might net you $5,500. Dealer offers you a $3,200 trade in value. Is that $2,300 difference worth your time?
Let's say you have a $50,000 ish BMW to sell. Private party might net you $53,000. Dealer offers you a $45,000 trade in value. Is that $8,000 difference worth your time and investment.
Like all things, there are exceptions to the rule. My sister had a Jeep Grand Cherokee with a Hemi. A mechanic warned her of an impending catastrophic engine failure. She immediately traded it in for a slightly newer regular Cherokee and didn't have to disclose the impending vehicle failure. The newer Cherokee had the 2.4L with the oil consumption issue. I don't know dollars and cents, but she bitched about that and got a little trade credit for the engine recall. I'm sure she's still upside down in payments, 3 vehicles later, but that's beside the point. Dealer trading and buying helped keep her from getting stuck with a lemon.

sounds like I'm gonna sell to a dealer

so is there a disadvantage to trading it in on a purchase?

I've heard they'll just limit the discounts they'd offer you on the new purchase or low-ball your trade-in to balance out what they get
