Name of course : Chemistry - A Molecular Science
Description : A fundamental study of molecular bonding, structure, and reactivity. Principles of atomic structure, ionic and covalent bonding, reaction energetics, intermolecular forces, precipitation reactions, acid/base reactions, oxidation/reduction processes, and introductions to organic and inorganic chemistry.
Prerequisites : One Year of High School chemistry or completion of CH 111 with grade of C- or better; and eligibility for MA 107

instructor comments :I liked Brown, he was a great guy, he's very "excited" in his teaching, he knows a lot about the material, etc. The only hard part are the tests, but if you study a lot, and know the material, it's an easy class.

course comments :I took 3 years of chemistry and was fine with the course, but I know lots of folks had some difficulty. You have to stay on your toes and keep up with the material and if you don't understand entirely, there are lots of tutoring/study opportunities, take advantage of them!

class comments :The class was ok. Dr. Brown is VERY enthusiastic and I was able to stay awake (c; You have to stay on your toes and keep up with the material and get help outside of class if you need it, but most of it's all in your course book (it's a must-buy!)

class comments :Dr. Brown was very easygoing. Attendance was optional, but the lectures were well worth the time - he was very enthusiastic about his teaching and you learned a lot by attending. Only bad part is that the tests counted for everything...

class comments :I HAD an A in the class until my final ruined it. I guess you shouldn't worry though because I apparently was the first one to drop an entire letter grade as a result of the final. Tests shouldn't count for everything in an introductory level course though.

class comments :The class was easy to me because I read the book and remembered chemistry from high school and came to lecture every time and learned when I did my webassigns. No attendence policy. Pretty good book, the only work I had to do was a weekly webassign and reading the book

I thought she was easy, I was one iota away from an A+, and I learned a lot. She's probably the best chem instructor (fall 2001 was her first time here)

class comments :This class is all about Webassign and WebCT. Webassign for homeworks and classworks (classwork stuff was basically your attendance grade, and whether or not you were awake in class). WebCT is this other online class tool. It was the way you were supposed to contact Dr. Sandberg outside of class, had the syllabus, calander of events, and the way you took your timed quizes. Lab every other week.. problem session every other week (but you were exempt from problem session if you did well enough

class comments :large lecture hall, pretty boring. we were used as controll against a smaller self paced class with laptops. Ubie's problem session was a big help. He taught more in 15 minutes that MOH (Maria Oliver-hoyo) taught in an hour.

She likes to prepare her students for later courses. She makes the class really hard, then sets the curve low. Passing is around 45% Somewhere in the low 80's is an A.

class comments :The good part is the class is very well prepared for. The bad news is the professor speaks this spanish slurred english that is rather challenging to decipher. She is friendly and helpful though. Ever taken a class where you understood not enough to understand, but enough to pass it, this is that kind of class. The whole semester was just pure confusion. Too many unrelated rules and not really sure which applied to certain situations.

class comments :Now, I've heard this guy has gotten a little easier, but when I had him there were only three tests with like 8 questions on them each. I would know an awful lot of material, get stuck on one or two questions and come out with a 70 or 80. This is the kind of class you want to avoid especially as a freshman. Get someone that puts 40 questions on a test, and you'll do alot better.

Lots of hand-holding, everyday homework assignments, and attendance policies. Beyond that, he's a decent instructor; I'd be interested in taking him for a higher-level course to see what he's really like, except that I don't like chemistry enough to bother.

Go to class, because she has in-class questions that you have to input into webassign (going is the only way to get these). Exams are fairly difficult, but there's nothing on them you haven't seen before. Go to SI.

The examples he uses in class have little relation to the webassign problems and most of the problems aren't used in tests, but out of 100 problems on the final, he used 2 that were in other assignments. He let us out late 2 days, which he said he was entitled to.

class comments :Compared to my friend's chemistry classes, this has to be about the worst class. Although our webassigns were slightly shorter, we were far less prepared for them, and most times the material was covered after a webassign was due. Be prepared to teach yourself a majority of the material. There is no attendance policy, and after the first week or so about half the class stopped coming. Try to come on the day before the test when Warren will sometimes go over test material.

instructor comments :Warren is all about respect, yet he does not give any out. Students who used PDAs or laptops to take notes on were disregarded from the beginning. Also if you wear a hat to class know that by doing so you forfeit any chance of help from him. Even though the class is huge, don't plan on talking at all or else he will completely stop his lecture to single you out. Grading was a good part of the class, since you get back tests next day and usually there is a big curve.

class comments :The class was fairly easy, especially the exam since it was all multiple choice. If you take this section with Dr. Brown I would recommend that you buy the book used so you can just write your notes on the space provided in the book, plus you can just highlight all the main topics.

instructor comments :he was funny. perhaps you laugh AT him more than you laugh WITH him, but he'll have you laughing nonetheless. he was extremely enthusiastic about the course, which made you forget how boring it really was for a few minutes, but then it was back to reality. if he taught a good subject (good meaning one i like) then he'd be a really good instructor though. so yeah, if chem is required for you to take (why would you take it otherwise?), definitely go with brown.

class comments :Dr. Neyhart made this class bearable and dare I say...enjoyable? Liberal use of in-class examples made the material much more engaging. I especially liked the four-screen approach to presenting information (PowerPoint, two overheads, and the blackboard). I found this kept me taking notes and being much more interested than just if he had lectured off a PowerPoint.

Thoroughly presented most material, tried to keep lectures interesting, seemed like he had a genuinely good time teaching the class. He almost always could accomodate you in his office hours if you made an appointment, and worked with you to arrive at the solution when went to office hours.

class comments :Fairly easy class. Generous attendence policy, something like you only had to be at 2/3 of the lectures. She did a lot of demos in class, which were pretty cool. The book for this class is pretty terrible, and you'll get a whole lot more from the online book or from the lecture.

It is not required that you attend the lectures and your lowest test of the four regular ones he gives is replaced with your final exam. If you show up, do the webassigns, and get help if you need it before the exams (he does not do reviews), you should be ok.

class comments :The class is not hard if you study the powerpoints and show up to most of the classes. At least 60% of the normal class did not show except for exam days. The book is helpful but if you only study the powerpoints and attend the lectures then you may only need it for a few tables if you can't find those elsewhere. Orji grades on quite a heavy curve, so if you can manage B's, you'll end up with an A in the end.

He had problems getting papers graded within two class periods sometimes, but when the papers come back he is willing to hear your appeals on any question and does give partial credit. class comments :i took it online, unless you have major knowledge in chemistry or you're really good at teaching yourself, it's very hard. we had 3-4 webassigns due every tuesday,which wasnt that bad and a 3 day period to take an online test which were timed an hour long, and usually used all 60 min. i spent a lot of my time at the chem tutorial center.

instructor comments :his tests were nothing like the webassign that we had the few weeks before, everything was 100x harder than normal chemistry classes. he curved on 96 percentile, but it was only 3 or 4 points tops. the final was absolutly ridiculous. if you could get another teacher i'd recommend it

class comments :Labs didn't work, teacher went between english and spanish during class. She yelled at the TAs, despite them being better at explaining ideas to us. Tests weren't entirely too bad, but without a serious curve I wouldn't have done well.

class comments :took a lot of studying for the tests which is to be expected..I recommend SI/tutorial center for webassigns!! she never let us out early though, usually a few min late. she CURVES like crazy.. and all lectures are online so you can bring them to class. also, our class was very behind on material.

instructor comments :she's nice, and we always got our tests back the next time class met... she just confused herself at times in the beginning because she hadn't taught ch 101 in awhile. definitely look at her old tests and practice tests she puts online--it helps! overall.. i'd recommend her for ch 101!

instructor comments :She was generous with webassign extensions and gave EXCELLENT curves. She was very friendly. The semester started out as a drag though. She spent way too much time talking about webassign which got us behind.

class comments :class was challenging but "fun". one webassign per week, fairly long, but extensions were not difficult to obtain (for those who asked ahead of time). class runs until the last minute every session. book is useful for studying/clarifying a concept that might be confusing in lecture, but not entirely necessary - could get away w/o one or by borrowing on occasion. attendance wasn't taken. powerpoints posted online before lecture, so you didn't have to take your own notes if you didn't want to

instructor comments :great prof! she's so enthusiastic, but not annoyingly so. she's really approachable after lecture and outside of class. powerpoint lectures are very organized and easy to understand. she also provides past exams ($4 - for chem. club i think) to practice with. most importantly, she never made me feel stupid for asking "dumb" questions - that is her best quality.
