instructor :Chu
instructor rating :0 - Horrible
instructor comments :DO NOT TAKE CHU. He was awful. He is hard to understand and tells you that he will kick you if you do not know something he thinks you should. Once we had a test question and I answered it correctly using a method that we just learned in class, yet I still lost 11 out of 15 points. His reasoning was that my method worked only in special cases . . . such as that test problem . . .

instructor comments :Stitz doesn't bs anything. Goes over countless examples in class. No offense to anyone on this board, but it's your own fault if you don't make an A or B in here. Pretty much gives everything needed for sucess, including a practice test a few classes before the test that's identical to the real test

instructor comments :Bad. I could not follow the guy in class one bit. His handwritting on the board was no better than a scrawl, and he would explain what he was doing so poorly that I never understood what was going on. Then the tests would be about 6 questons long, and all of the questions would be insanely hard. I studied my Ass of to pull the an A, but many in the class were not so lucky. This was an honors class mind you.

course comments :I could see how what I was learning would help me in future engineering classes. The material can be hard, and there is quite a lot to learn, but all it takes is consistent practice. I thought the material was important
class :Spring 2002 section 003
grade received :A-
class rating :3 - Good
class comments :The class more tricky than it was hard. Tests counted for most of the grade so you could easily mess up your average if you weren't prepared on a test day. Homework wasn't required, although I don't think most people could get through 242 without doing it. The attendance policy was fair and the class itself was fine as far as math classes go, but nothing to be excited about.
instructor :Al-ashhab
instructor rating :3 - Good
instructor comments :This guy was pretty good. He had really nice handwriting and he was very easy to understand. He knew the material very well and he wanted to help everyone understand the math, but I felt like the classroom environment was too "distant" even for a class that tiny. Also, the class averages were usually not very great, but that was more a factor of people not practicing enough rather than his instruction. He didn't give us a syllabus until a week into the class, too.

course comments :The material was (as calculus is) fairly boring, but it wasn't hard. It took some practice and a lot of time outside of class, but the concepts were fairly simple to grasp. There as a lot of material to remember, but it all ties together.
class :Spring 2002 section 005
grade received :A-
class rating :3 - Good
class comments :The class was fairly easy, thanks to his ideas on grading. He didn't care for Maple, so the answers were practically given to us and he only counted 2 of them. He taught the material very well, which paid off if you attended class (no attendance policy). The class let out late fairly often, rarely early.
instructor :Gagliardi
instructor rating :4 - Awesome
instructor comments :He spoke clearly, unfortunately very fast at times, which was hard to follow if you weren't awake. The grader was somewhat slow at first, but caught up in time. Dan held a bunch of office hours outside of his scheduled ones, so it was convenient to those who needed/wanted to go. He was extremely friendly and added a lot of humor to an otherwise humorless class.

More amazing is that he never seeemed to use notes, but that it all flowed from his head. It showed that he knew the stuff well. The last couple of tests had some extremely difficult problems, though.

My only tip to you is to get on his good side: show up to class early/on time, and don't miss class...EVER. The tests were pretty rough, though we were allowed to use calculators. However, he was very stingy with the partial credit.

Enjoyed hearing about the "sporty method" of solving certain problems, and all of his quaint British expressions kept the class entertaining. Pretty good at interacting with the class during lectures, and explains things pretty well. I think he's retired now, though, so it might be a moot point. If you missed out on him, I'm sorry.

instructor comments :He has a little accent but I was able to understand him completely after a week. He gives a curve. He assigns homework but he doesn't take it up, look at it, or take it for a grade. But the test come from the homework. He allows one 4 x 6 notecard each test. You can cram whatever you want on it. And two notecards on the final.

course comments :Still not a big fan of calculus in general, but my theory is that if you can pass 241 you shouldn't have problems with 242. It's not nearly as bad.
class :Fall 2002 section 011

class comments :The class is easier than 241 because there is a huge curve at the end. My final grade was a B+ but my test average was only a 78, my Maple average was about a 40, and even though I never checked, I'm convinced that my final exam score sucked. That curve definitely helped though
instructor :Zenkov

instructor comments :This man's idea of class is working problems from homework on the board. For test review, he throws some problems together, then tries to work them in class. It usually ends up he hasn't worked them before so some are too hard to do and when we run out of time at the end of class, he doesn't have answers so we can check our work. Was slightly humorous.

course comments :While it's alright, some of the concepts are presented weirdly in the text. Another issue pertains with the Maple labs--they seem to be more of a tool to force you to do homework in the stupid Maple software. Some concepts near the end were very difficult to understand and you need to pay attention to multiple integrals and line integrals/vector fields.

class comments :*4 tests at 45 points each *1 90 point final exam *15 points class participation *15 points Maple assignments Large class (cap at 100). Fail rate on some tests was painful to see. Often times, approximately 40% of the class would fail the test.
instructor :Chung
instructor rating :3 - Good
instructor comments :He knows his stuff for the most part...but it is difficult to comprehend him at times. Sly understated sense of humor. Give him 3 weeks and you should be able to understand how he talks by then. While he is a nice person, his examples don't always illustrate the concepts well. However, he is very precise in what goes on tests and won't make you make huge intuitive leaps for test problems. An ability to learn by the book is helpful with him.

Not too much material in that the final third of the book was basically the same thing, just expanded.
class :Spring 2004 section 001
grade received :B
class rating :4 - Awesome
class comments :I liked the way it was setup in that you could do as good as the amount of time you were willing to put into it. I think this is only with Pang though, as I have heard otherwise in other 242 classes. Class ran over sometimes but not because he was disorganized or wasting time. Great book(in that you can use it for 3 semesters) but look forward to selling.

instructor rating :4 - Awesome
instructor comments :Tao Pang...The best new math professor I have ever had anywhere period. He was so helpful/responsive, made it possible to pull A without buttload of work, would stop to answer questions until you understood, or offered to help after class. I wouldn't take anyone else.

class comments :Occasional webassings and maple were part of the grade. The tests were very straightforward, with one problem for each concept covered. If you do bad on them then it is your fault. No attendance policy. She curved one test with a low class average. Gave extra credit for completing an optional Maple.

instructor comments :Get Taylor if you can. She explains everything very well, and is very willing to help outside of class. She returned tests quickly, one time on the day after the test. Also friendly and cares about the students. If you want to really learn the material, this is the class for you.

He even allows usto pick up ourtest at 330, take it home or do whatever as long as we were back to turn it in by the end of the class (920). He also allows you to use Maple on the tests, which can be really helpful when doing long strings of integrals. The practice tests are identical to the actual tests, except the numbers are changed an

The material is well-presented, Mr. Chu does a good job of presenting everything in a way that all the students can understand. The only thing wrong with this class is that it's a morning class.
instructor :Chu

He's the best Professor I've had so far this semester.

class comments :For a class like this, you need a good instructor, and lots of time to understand the material. I thought for the short amount of time we had, Dr. Norris did a great job covering the major points while including some relevant applications to an engineering curriculum. Attendance was not taken, homework was not graded. Class let out right on time.

instructor comments :Really understandable guy and more than willing to help if he sees you putting forth effort; friendly, too. Tests were graded and returned the next day. This is the kind of person you want to take higher-level math courses from. His dry humor helped to break the monotony of the material.
