course :SOC 203
course rating :4 - Awesome
course comments :the material is easy but might cause difficulty for people who are stubborn or argumentative... once you get a basic understanding of it the pattern is easy to figure out
class :Fall 2001 section 001
grade received :N/A
class rating :4 - Awesome
class comments :1 mulltiple choice quiz every week and a few tests, she told us the essay questions beforehand so we could prepare. we averaged 1 video a week. you probably needed the books since some questions would be directly from them, but you would only lose a few points without them i suppose.
instructor :Terry
instructor rating :4 - Awesome
instructor comments :really nice and friendly, i can understand some of the reasons why people may not like her style of teaching but i dont really think she tried to surpress their opinions as some other people have implied. The thing is she has to present her material whether the class agrees with it or not.

course comments :Course attempts to discuss social issues (welfare, drugs, education, etc.) but is usually elementary and had an extremely liberal slant (and I'm liberal).
class :Fall 2001 section 004
grade received :A
class rating :2 - Average
class comments :Class was not really very interesting---mostly lectures although there were a ton of videos. A lot of it was common sense type stuff. The class is very easy though if you need a free elective. There was no attendance policy, but there was a weekly quiz that you had to do (but she told you which day)
instructor :Terry
instructor rating :2 - Average
instructor comments :She is very nice and helpful, but didn't allow much class debate. You basically had to just agree with the book, which was a horrible book. Among other things the book was pro-legalization of heroin (said only danger of it was its illegality) and also majorly distorted some statistics.

class comments :It wasn't that hard. It's just that I don't like to read much. Had I tried harder I could have easily made an A.

instructor rating :3 - Good
instructor comments :She was pretty understanding and fair. Apparently she made it hard to get an A, but she obviously didn't want anyone to fail either. She even gave extra points for perfect attendance.

class comments :NOthing special. This class is good for arguing, but expect a lot of ignorant people in there. We had a quiz every day, at the begining (they were easy if you read, and you can use your book and notes anyways) he just started taking attendance later in the semester. The field trip to the prison was cool though.

instructor comments :Sort of a weird guy. I guess he was nice, but I didn't like his quizzes. He expected you to read 20 page chapters, then he would ask incredibly detailed T/F questions. You could completely understand the topic in question and still make a 50 on the quiz. I thought he did a bad job of teaching the course.

class comments :Ms. Warren is very laid back and is easy to approach. The readings & test were very easy. The book is a must, and her attendance policy is basically pop quizes from time to time for this class and others I have had with her. Lectures do get out early often if the material she planned to cover is done.

instructor comments :A very passionate doctorial student, who you can tell loves her field of study. She is very friendly, layed back and practical. Assignments were graded promptly and fairly. She is very friendly outside of class (tried to talk me out of econ). In addition, her lectures are more like debates btw students, and she encourages an open atmosphere.

course comments :I thought this was sort of interesting (then again I switched away from SOC...). The class is about social problems like poverty, unemployment, disease, etc., and their effects on society. A textbook and 3 paperback books were required. One of the books we didn't have to read entirely--we used it to give presentations for the class.
class :Fall 2003 section 001

class comments :Definitely need to read the books. Also, she swore to us that she would not ask stastics, but she had some questions on the tests that had to do with statistics (who memorizes those of course?? No one!). There were 4 tests (including the final), but there were supposed to be 5. One of the tests was turned into a paper-outline thingy because she thought the book was too hard for us (it was on economics). If you enjoy hearing about capitalism again and again and again at 8 am, this one's for you.

course comments :Interesting stuff. Allowed you to present your own opinion.
class :Fall 2003 section 010
grade received :A-
class rating :4 - Awesome
class comments :The class was fairly easy, as it was mostly common sense. The only assignments were 2-3 papers and then tests. I recommend attending classes, as it is a very involved class with discussions of topics and class participation is part of the grading if I am not mistaken. Material was presented well. We watched a couple videos.

instructor comments :She graded assignments fairly promptly. She was very helpful outside of class and was willing to help you understand or debate any social topic. Very friendly and caring teacher (someone who actually cares about your grade in her class). Very understanding of students.

course comments :Material was interesting, though there was a lot of it and it wans't organized particularly well.

class comments :There was a very strict attendance policy. After a certain number (like 3) you'll lose a third of a grade letter (like A to A- then to B+ etc) with no exceptions.

instructor comments :Very interesting guy though can be a bit blut with students. Tried to keep the class participating through the presentations.

course comments :Considerable amount of reading in the beginning of the semester, but it gradually decreases as the term progresses. Nothing too outrageous and the material is very relevant and easy to understand.

class comments :Interesting course material. Attendance is required and helps your grade. No final exam. You'll need the books to do the pop quizzes.

instructor comments :Sarah is really laid back and more like another student than the average professor. She's always willing to help out with questions arise and is a very fair grader.

course comments :Easy material - just read the book and show up to class often enough and you're all set.

class comments :Not much work at all - tests are multiple choice and really really easy. Class almost always lets out early. The only real work required was for the two final projects but they were interesting enough.

instructor comments :This guy is absolutely hilarious - makes fun of a lot of stuff (including himself sometimes) and was an enjoyable class to be in. For a T/Th class, the time passed really quickly. Definitely take this guy if you can!

course comments :Could be very interesting if you are into soc at all. This class is not for a conservative standpoint. This is one of those classes where it seems like white males have done everything wrong in our history and that’s why we have social problem ( I am exaggerating but you get my point)

class comments :LOTS OF READING is needed to do well in the class. Tests are from the books. You will watch a lot of movies but they have not much to do with the tests and can be a little extreme.

instructor comments :She was nice but she just took a job somehwre else so I dont' think anyone else will have her but she had tons of stories and was very liberal on most issues and was very feminist.
