Summer Blood Drives!

submitted by mmpatel on Wednesday, June 4 2003 at 10:18 AM

If you haven't given blood before, it's a pretty cool/rewarding experience. If you have given blood before, you know what I'm talking about.

There will be blood drives set up around campus on:
June 17: College of Textiles Room 2309, Centennial Campus, 2:00-6:30pm
June 18: Talley Student Center Ballroom, 7:30am-5:30pm
June 19: Talley Student Center Ballroom, 7:30am-5:30pm
June 20: Vet School, 7:30am-4:30pm

PM me with the following info and I'll set up an appointment for ya:
- Name
- Date (that you prefer)
- Time (that you prefer)
- email address

Thanks!

You can either PM me, or shoot me an email (mmpatel@unity.ncsu.edu).

Either works.

Thanks!

How long are you supposed to wait after giving blood to give again? I know I gave during Greek Week... is that long enough?

Make sure that if your planning on giving blood that you have not lived outside of the U.S. for over 6 months since Jan. 1, 1980. I tried to go to the Red Cross yesterday and donate and they turned me away because I lived overseas when my dad was in the military. They are afraid of Mad Cow disease for some reason and they said we are ineligible to donate until they come up with a way for testing for Mad Cow disease. I don't know how many people this applies to but I just wanted to let people know so that you didn't show up and had to go home.

I think the American Red Cross is the only group that handles blood donations. I've never heard of any others.

Why won't they take your blood?

I'll be just a few days short of 56 for any of these dates...

Rex Blood Plan also deals with blood. Though they are run through rex their blood goes all over the nation. Rex always excepts my blood....except today because of low iron. But that is beside the point. The Red Cross won't accept my blood because Rex tested me false positive for Hepititus B. When filling out the questionair for RC it asks if you have ever tested positive for Hept B and I said yes....being honest. I tested positive but it was false. Red cross will never accept my blood now because they think I have Hept B. The funny thing is they test every single doners blood for Hept B. So I should still be able to give but they won't let me. So they suck.

Blood drives are fun. I like to hear them scream when I run them over!

I know there are volunteers that help out with giving a little snack/soft drink to people after they've donated - I'll check to see if they still need volunteers for that sort of thing

Yeah, that living overseas thing sucks. I used to give blood 4 times a year (I'm A-), but now I can't because I lived in London in 1990.

most definitely - we just wanted to schedule as many appointments as possible to make sure we don't get flooded with donors at a popular time - that way donors don't have to wait as long and everything just flows better.

Shoot me a PM if you know of a time you can go right now, but by all means you can walk-in.

Thanks everyone

I'm flustered, I want to give again but not after I nearly blacked out the last time I gave. I always eat breakfast every morning (I feel nauseous if I don't) and my iron level was awesome, I weighed about 125 at the time and the cut-off's 120. I don't know why I had such a hard time with it. I'm scared that if I give again they won't be able to respond to my near-black out. Has anyone had a similar experience? Has this experience repeated itself?
