Personally, I think this is the first step onto a truly global level where one every day Joe can affect global economics. If this had happened in Chattanooga, TN, the rest of the world wouldn't have raised an eyebrow. It would be like the Tokyo subway gas attacks and all the other attacks that are so easy to forget. You know why they care? Because when you stifle economics people get their panties ruffled. Doubt me? Look at Africa, the loss of life there makes this look like amateur night, and the only person that gives a shit is sally Struthers and a few missionaries. But now, with the world trade center? nyc? real-estate owned by foreign investors? wall street? You think the rest of the world that has something to lose is going to stand for that? Money brings everything together. Gecko was right. It’s all about a river of transactions bringing different cultures together. You know how I know? Because every time I get on the elevator, I hear some dumb white bitch complaining how she can't understand her math teacher.

They picked the two greatest high-profile targets in the world: American money and the American military.

While its a disturbing thought that the world trade center buildings are demolished, our economy is far from it. Global Markets may have reacted, but I think domestically, we're going to rebuild from this. Sure theres going to be a rough spat or two... but remember, war has taken us out of economic depression before.

Good point. They're symbols of American economic and military power, but they sure aren't the substance.

bob, do you REALIZE the extent of this event? it is beyond Pearl Harbor. over 50K people died. in one attack. flying civilian passenger airliners into two 110-story office buildings, where 50K people work per day and 100K go to visit everyday. and they attacked our military headquarters, something that has never been done in the history of our country.

just a fundamental misunderstanding of economics. War always injures the economy, regardless of temporary benefits to select sectors.

But do you really think it's going to be a war? More than likely it'll be a few Tomahawks, ALCMs and JDAMs here and there, plus maybe a few Spec-ops type raids, and that's about it. I foresee no draft, no big wartime production, nothing.

I would have to agree with maverik on the wiseness of the choice of targets... The world trade center isn't gonna be back up and running for a long time. VERY crippling blow. but what sucks the most is all the people screaming for revenge, cuz it's gonna be us college students goin out there to fight. heh, not to sound self-centered, but personally I don't want my life to culminate to dying from the flak coming from a stray grenade.
