I've been realizing there are some good questions concerning the posting guidelines* in this section. I've been kind of playing them by ear at first but here's basically what I have come up with. Subject to slight amounts of change, and I must mention that I can't cover all possible situations. That's where good judgement comes in.
What Old School is for:
Remembering what was great about NC State, the early Wolf Web, etc.
For those of you in the work force now, you probably know what I'm talking about here: college was an incredibly simple time in life. To give you an example, on Friday I left my apartment sometime before six in the morning. I got back home around 6:30 in the evening, had dinner, then went back to work and didn't return until around midnight. All of that was due to work.
I generally never had days like that in college unless they involved an afternoon nap, or at the very least, some kind of, shall we say, social activity that was the purpose of me staying up that late. It might be a bit of a "grass is greener" mindset, but you can definitely appreciate how great a time you had when you were younger. I guess it might have been even greater if I could take my current income and superimpose it over my college years...
Pardon the digression, but one of the great things about the section is the number of people who remember what NC State was like five, six, even ten years ago. It is also great to see a whole lot of people who were on this message board back when it was an aid to social interaction rather than a replacement for it.
Issues that pertain to alumni, older students
Who was it that asked questions about a Roth IRA in the Lounge? The Lounge may be more mature than Chit Chat, but you still have a bunch of friggin' idiots that patrol that place. From browsing the thread though, it looks like there were a few more knowledgeable people that were able to answer this guy's question, which is what we should have here. Honestly, I've seen more poorly-advised investment advice, career advice, etc than I care to stand. Here's my favorite idiotic investment advice. Generally don't trust people with money to manage it for you...
Chit Chatter posted words to the effect of "I disagree with you, Maverick, buying a house is not a good investment. I heard on NPR that property values will decrease in the next few years"
Well, damn, isn't that all the more reason that mean one should buy?
Not to mention should you really trust NPR to manage money well? Aren't they always asking for it? (Bad joke...)
Anyway, older people tend to have different interests, and so hopefully this section will cater to them. This is subject to some interpretation as to what is interesting to just Old Schoolers or just interesting to everyone.
What the section is not for:
Chit-Chat, etc
Don't post the ending to the latest Harry Potter book here. Don't post entirely with "pad". I might tolerate "Teh Fish" once or twice since we do remember it from Old School. And I guess All Your Base, of course.
However, if a topic is turning into mindless drivel, I'm sorry, but it's getting moved to Chit Chat. Actually, I'm not so much sorry to the posters, I'm sorry to marko for dumping it on him. (I gave him far too much business lately). If a topic was mindless drivel to start with, once again, it goes to Chit Chat. Trust me, it will get a lot more of the nonsensical attention that you desire there than it will in here.
A lot of Soap Box material might concievably make its way in here. Not that I don't want you to express your political opinions, but I want to move it to the right place so it gets the right attention. You wouldn't get up on your Soap Box about your stance on the Iraq War during a eulogy would you? (Well, unless you were Pennsylvania Lt. Gov. Catherine Baker Knoll but that's beyond the point) That being said, again, it takes a little bit of interpretation, since a lot of time politics or entertainment is so closely intertwined with our lives, but again, I will exercise good judgement.
Stuff that's obviously racist or pornographic
Remember the white supremicists that posted here like 5 years ago? Well we banned them then and we will ban them now. Enough said.
Porn will either get sent to Chit Chat (Sorry Marko) or into the Trash Bin.
And that's all that I can think of right now.
