The 6800 is $290, the 6600 is $145. I really want to get a good card that is gonna last awhile and handly the best games. The 6800gt looks like it would be that card, but everyone keeps raving about the 6600gt. Which one should I go with? They both have excellent reviews on Newegg.

oops, should be 6600gt in the title.

How much better performance wise is the 6800gt. The cost really isnt an issue, I just want to get a good top notch card.

Yeah, it seems to run BF2 well based on the reviews off it on Newegg. I just watched the trailer for that game and it looks insane.

I dont have any issues in BF2 or HL2 on maxed settings with my MSI6600gt.

Farcry gave me a shit-fit though before i updated the drivers. The gamma was always way off, and some textures wouldn't load at all.

^ do you have vsync on?

I run HL2 at 1280 x 1024 at 75 frames with vsync on.
ATI x800XL.

If you don't want tearing, then you'll need a real good card so you can turn vsync on. I doubt you can do that with a 6600GT. It doesn't bother some ppl, but it bothers me when there's a tear as I turn.

I would say to get a 6800 Baseline which is what I did. A 6600GT is 128bit with 8 pipelines. The 6800 is 256bit with 12 pipelines (16 possible with softmod). The 6800 outperforms the 6600GT by a mile and it is a good middle ground between the 6800GT and the 6600GT.

Homeskillet I am, here I'll show you.

Id say its faster by a good bit. I guess Id have to define a mile. For 256bit and 4 more stock pipelines it is a better deal and a middle ground. Just like I said.

BTW its the GeForce 6800 Non GT I am talking about, just to clear it up.

and smoothcrim that was for Dual 6600GTs not singles, read your own review before you post it. And everyone knows for some reason in Dual setups the GT's run better because of the clock speeds. But this topic is on a single 6600GT vs a 6800 not duals.

That is true, but the basis of your article is on dual set ups not singles. And you claimed Doom 3 is the only game that utilizes 4 more pieplines and I showed you 4 more games where the 6800 Baseline clearly outperformed the 6600GT. Just give it up, I researched the shit out of the 2 cards because I was determining which card to buy for myself. BTW I have the 6800 Baseline. A good middle ground between the 6600GT and the 6800GT.

Quote :

I didnt even notice this statement which is also not true. The 6800 Baseline has 128mb just like the 6600GT it also has lower clock speeds to increase the life of the product because of less heat at this moment in time my 6800 is running at 48C with stock cooling which is pretty damn good. The 6800 excels because of the 256bit processing and the 12 pipelines over the 6600GT 128bit processing and 8 pipelines (the same numbers as my old ATI 9500 Pro).

lets get it straight

vanilla 6800 with 256mb.. like I said (I didn't say all 6800's came with 256mb)

difference ~ 0 in most cases but 6600gt still wins

6600GT wins due to higher clock and memory speeds

toss up depending on what level of detail you prefer to play with

same

No where here do I see the 6800 blowing anything out of the water.

since I'm apparently not qualified to assess which is better
Quote :
"We were fortunate enough to test two systems provided by ASUS and MSI, both premier manufacturers, and we are suitably impressed with both the manufacturing quality of the products, and their single-card performance. The 6600GT’s came as a bit of a surprise, mostly because we underestimated the power of the GT suffix, but the 6800 showed it could easily hold its own when the chips were down, especially when taxed by more bandwidth intensive games such as Far Cry and Need for Speed Underground 2."

Like I said, you can pay more for a 6800 but realize very few games are going to tax the memory bandwidth as much as raw gpu processing power. This is why the cards are closely matched in performance, going back and forth between which fairs best with different benchmarks. That said you'd be a fool to pay DOUBLE for the 6800 unless you bought it with the sole intention of softmodding it. Even then, if you can get 2 6600gt's for the cost of 1 6800, you'd be best of running a dual 6600gt sli array.

Now come back with some real analysis of the two cards instead of throwing some random site's benchmarks up and expecting them to make the point for you.

Lets add more benchmarks from a more reputable site to further illustrate my point

so you can all shut the fuck up with this notion of me being pwnt, when it's obvious who's right here

Here is my question why are 2 benchmarks so different? Mine is off of http://www.xbitlabs.com a very high performance gaming site who tests a shit load of hardware.

The next thing is you are fucking retarded if you think the 6800 cost twice that of a 6600GT. Check the damn prices.

No wait I will show you.

EVGA NVidia GeForce 6800 $189.00
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16814130202

EVGA Nvidia GeForce 6600GT $155.00
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16814130220

Do the math. And for my benchmarks ill pay that $34.00 more for a 6800. For 4 more pipelines (making it 12) (16 possible with softmod) and 256bit over 128bit. 128bit and 8 pipelines is 2 year old technology, all NVidia did was run that clock speed up as high as she would go pushing the card as hot as it would go without damaging the card (for the warranty 6 months atleast, I think its 6 months).

Owned again...try a new subject.

For anyone that wants to softmod your 6800 Vanilla into a GT here is how

http://www.ocia.net/articles/6800/6800.shtml

smoothcrim the only thing I have noticed about yours and mine is that my review are AGP not PCI-E and the 6800 is 128mb not 256mb. MacGyver didnt specify PCI-E so I figured he wanted AGP. All your reviews are PCI-E with a card that I havent seen (havent seen the 256mb version) and it seems that card runs slower than my $189.00 128mb card. All of my benchmarks are for an AGP 128mb GeForce 6800 and an AGP 128mb GeForce 6600GT.

And I will show you from one of the most well known Hardware Review sites. Toms Hardware Guide.

First close one but who plays the Sims 2 with a 6800? haha

Thats enough for me. Dont try and tell me Toms Hardware is wrong that site is the shit and has been around foreveeeeer. More people read there for reviews than any other site. So for 30.00 I will take my 6800.

Looks like THG is blocking pictures here is the link to the benchmarks if you want to see who is right.

Whatever the crappy shit is that came with my Dell 2400 2 years ago. I am sure its fucking terrible.

I have since ripped it apart, the only things from it in my custom comp I built are the CPU 2.4 P4, my hard drive, and CDRW, and that RAM.

Your computer has PC2700 in it so you need to get that speed if you upgrade. Im pretty sure that is the mobo max because that is what Dell installed. Here is a link to your sys specs.

I recommend Corsair, but im sure some people will try to argue.

Alright your mobo supports up to 4gb of PC3200 184pin. How much money are you wanting to spend? Here are some good options.

"Supports dual channel (128-bit wide) memory interface
- Each channel supports 2 DIMM sockets
Supports up to 4GB system memory
Synchronous operation with processor system bus
- PC2100/PC2700/PC3200 (DDR266/DDR333/DDR400) with 800MHz FSB CPU. DDR333 will run at 320MHz memory frequency when used with 800MHz FSB CPU.
- Use PC2100/PC2700 (DDR266/DDR333) with 533MHz FSB CPU
- Use PC2100 (DDR266) with 400MHz FSB CPU
Supports non-ECC (x64) DIMM using 128Mb, 256Mb or 512Mb
Supports unbuffered DIMMs"

That is one thing I can not answer and I dont want to throw out my opinions with no facts. But here is what I know for a fact. I run that Corsair Value RAM (1.5gig PC3200) and I run Doom 3 at Med-High settings at 60fps constant 1024x768. Just read up on THG I gave you and maybe someone will reply here with more detailed info on Low Latency or info on how dual channel works, I dont know because I have never had either setup.

Good luck.
