CARY, N.C. -- A Cary woman reached a settlement with the recording industry over illegal downloads.

Lynn Scott's teenage daughter downloaded thousands of songs from services that allowed free file sharing.

Scott settled for $3,000.

Her daughter plans to repay her mom by working part-time jobs.

Only $3000? That's not bad considering what they have been settling for.

I think Joshnumbers is right. They probably picked Cary because it has low crime and is an All-American kind of white bread suburb. People think "God if they got someone in Cary they can get anyone!"

Just download from Russian pay sites or private FTPs, that's the way to go. I guess I should technically say you should pay for all of your music, but who am I kidding...

they go for logs, not hard evidence of it being on your harddrive.

if they just check logs would an adequate excuse be that someone broke into your wireless and dled from there?

i don't think they have to prove that.

because judges aren't smart enough to know all that and there's precedent now and also the RIAA is in bed with the judicial system.

it's always made me wonder why, with all the available technology, artists even go through record companies anymore...it seems like they could charge less to consumers and make more money

what's funny, is that the medium for d/ling has changed to bittorrent, and ftp servers have faded a LOT.

Etrade used to have server announcement posts, and now there are only a handful of people that post to that list anymore.

Sugarmegs used to have tons of ftp server admins too, and now there are only a couple on there.

On the flip side, bt has risen in popularity, and practically anybody i meet now into the online music trading scene looks at me funny when i ask them if they ftp...

bt's alright, dgmw, but ftp is my preferred method.

Yeah, I was never impressed by its performance. The shows available were awesome, but downloads were just ridiculously slow.
