Ladies and gentlemen,
I worked on an excel file saving at different interims the entire night last night; when I went to attach it to an email later in the evening, it had reverted to a previously saved version. Now, I KNOW I saved it many times during the process of working on it, and I never did a "Save As", I always hit the save icon. Is there any way to find this damn file besides searching for .xls files and the likes? Autorecovery didn't pull up anything and I checked the directory for auto save and there's nothing in it! It's set to save every 10 mins automatically...thanks for any tips!

I don't know what could have happened, but try doing the search for .XLS files. Search your entire drives, and then sort it by the 'Last Modified' column. That will show you the most-recently-edited files and could show you the latest version of the spreadsheet that could have magically gotten renamed somehow. 8/11/2005 7:11:53 AM |

if you had originally opened the excel file from an email or something then it was saving it to your outlook temp files. 8/11/2005 9:23:15 AM |

Blah.
I have a theory, formed only because I can't come up with another solution...
..I must have had two copies of the file open, one new, and one I was editing. Then, when I was done, assuming I hadn't saved it a last time, when i hit the X i chose yes to make sure everything was saved. But, the Yes I was choosing was from the dialog box pertaining to the old file, methinks. *Sigh* that's the only thing I can come up with...

Yesterday a coworker told me that she was sure that if you FORGOT to save a spreadsheet you were working on and managed to close it without saving you could still get it back in it's latest form. We argued for a couple of minutes because I think she's batshit crazy.
Debate. 8/11/2005 1:43:31 PM |

^ not sure about that one, I've seen computers crash and excel's autorecovery bullshit usually works fairly well...but I'm not sure when those temp files are deleted so I have no answer to your question. although, finding the answer is pretty obvious and easy..so do it your damn self lol 8/11/2005 2:15:50 PM |
