My DVD/CDRW drive (24x) will recognize a CD-R, but when I insert a CD-RW and attempt to format the disc, the drive does not even recognize a disc being in the machine.

Is there anyway to troubleshoot this? I am attempting to use a Memorex 24x 700mb 80 min "ultra speed" cd-rw. I have tried several discs out of the package.

I am attempting to format the disc using Roxio DirectCD. If anybody can recommend better software for formatting CD-RW's it would be greatly appreciated.

Roxio is shit. Try using Nero
