Is there any way to set the AIM preferences so that it is the same for every user (namely every user that will be created in teh future) or the preferences only able to be defined for one screen name?

preferences are saved to a folder, i believe.

so if you manually copy the file and put it into the new users folder, it may work.

If that's the case, you could create a .bat file on the desktop that copies the file into all the available directories in the AIM folder. Right?

well I was trying to think of a way to do it so that any new user that is created will have those properties, kindof like the default user with windows, it copies all of the files over...This would be for anyone who logs onto the computer and creates a new account so that the preferences will always be the same

basically, it has to be something inherent so that whenever AIM is opened and a new screen name is typed in, it has the same preferences without having to click on anything...

...I do not know if that really made sense though...

I see what you're saying.

Kind of like the windows folder views. if you synch all the folders to a certain view, then new folders will default to that view (i.e. list, thumbnail, details, etc)

I don't believe there's a way to do it in AIM though.

If you're comfortable editing your registry, you might be able to do it that way, Take a look.

BTW, if you don't know what to look for, you probably shouldn't try to edit anything.

Global settings are located in
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\America Online\AOL Instant Messenger (TM)\CurrentVersion

User specific settings are located in
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\America Online\AOL Instant Messenger (TM)\CurrentVersion\Users

Under the User key there will be a key for each username and under that key are all the options.

The keys seem to be well named, so it probably wouldn't be hard to figure out what does what.

if you wanted to copy the settings, you could export the individual user key to a .reg file, then open the .reg file with textpad/wordpad and do a search and replace from the old username to the username you wanted to use.

Then save it and double click the reg and add it back to the registry.

Nice job. I just didn't want to put any work into it to look the stuff up.

^ That's true, but I thought that it might have been helpful to list the relevent keys. I just wasn't feeling that helpful.
