Napster's WMA files have copy protection on them (I think) 9/19/2005 9:31:04 AM |

yes, I looked it up and Napster's WMA files do have DRM protection on them.
and iTunes can NOT import DRM protected WMA files 9/19/2005 10:31:15 AM |

oh look at that, he said napster right there in the first post. guess i skipped that part.
All of the online music stores stick DRM in their files ('cept those crazy russian ones)
But you're gonna have to look a bit deeper to crack it. Commercial programs won't work to do it (itunes, nero, anything like that). You're gonna have to pull up some obscure illegal program to do it. 9/19/2005 12:31:50 PM |

WMA DRM hasn't been cracked yet to my knowledge.
If you do find a program that does it, send me a PM. 9/19/2005 2:04:31 PM |

With Napster you are "renting" the music.
You do not own any of the songs; you are simply paying to listen to them for a month.9/19/2005 2:14:36 PM |

I'm not familiar with DMA-protected files, but the way I converted the protected Apple m4p to mp3 was by burning the songs onto a CD through iTunes and re-importing them as mp3. 9/19/2005 2:28:10 PM |

That would entail paying for those files. 9/19/2005 2:28:47 PM |

At least with iTunes you bought that music (which is why you were able to burn the songs).
With Napster, you have no right to reproduce the music in any medium.
Also, although this is from the Vorbis FAQ, the same applies to MP3, M4A, WMA and any other "lossy" codec:
Quote : | "You can convert any audio format to Ogg Vorbis. However, converting from one lossy format, like MP3, to another lossy format, like Vorbis, is generally a bad idea. Both MP3 and Vorbis encoders achieve high compression ratios by throwing away parts of the audio waveform that you probably won't hear. However, the MP3 and Vorbis codecs are very different, so they each will throw away different parts of the audio, although there certainly is some overlap. Converting a MP3 to Vorbis involves decoding the MP3 file back to an uncompressed format, like WAV, and recompressing it using the Ogg Vorbis encoder. The decoded MP3 will be missing the parts of the original audio that the MP3 encoder chose to discard. The Ogg Vorbis encoder will then discard other audio components when it compresses the data. At best, the result will be an Ogg file that sounds the same as your original MP3, but it is most likely that the resulting file will sound worse than your original MP3. In no case will you get a file that sounds better than the original MP3." |

this isn't fucking server-side ripping. if you find the program, you don't need to worry about it being shut down. you'll still be able to use the damn thing. 9/19/2005 4:45:30 PM |

you know what i mean, i have searched, its hard as fuck to find one, and none of them i have found have worked, and since you two are so retarded, let me explain this better, anybody whose creates a program and puts it out there, is gonna have it quickly yanked by the man, so the chances of catching a good one on a random google search on a particular day is nil. 9/19/2005 5:06:36 PM |

not a big suprise.
I mean it doesn't make much sense for someone to spend hours trying to crack a DRM and then publish it on the web only to risk legal penalties.
Its easier to either:
- Take the risk of downloading it from a P2P service - Borrow a CD - Buy the damn music 9/20/2005 7:49:13 PM |
