Ok. ive been doing some checking on news sources online as far as the war goes on in iraq. indep. news sources report Horriffic things.. anything from chemical warfare to nail shooting devices in iraq at present, crazy abuses/violence against women , rape, torture, things one would never imagine. We have all seen a glimpse of war crimes with abu gharib, and various other injustices (see amnesty intil report), that people had to endure, whilst everyone is silent cheering on the war and so called 'liberation of iraqi people'. & afhanistan et al. and it seems that what mainstream us media and govt reports is a bunch of twisted lies. and it appears now when brave voices speak, the darkness of what has happened/is happening has become known.

it appears that alot of what goes on is hidden, censored, u name it, we wont see it here. if people actually saw truth, i bet they would proably think different. whats up with that? discuss

caution: beware trolls

they are probably already typing angry letters about "liberal conspiracies", the "independent media" being made up, and how you just dont "get it"

most see it this way: mainstream media reports all bad stuff, while apparently in reality kids are running into the arms of soldiers and people are eating american fried chicken and are very happy.

its a minority that actually has these views, but i knew a guy who went over there pretty much all of last year. he had pics that i could barely look at. he says that things might actually be worse in some places than we see on tv. id trust a friend over the news anyday. of course, most dont belive this.

The site you linked is pretty interesting. Unfortunately, I wouldn't exactly call this reporter "unbiased". Ultimately, its tough to take him too seriously when his main reason for going to Iraq was to make Bush and the major media publications look bad.

Seems like the situation in Iraq is very peachy!

While falkland, and C16H13N2OCL always report things like:

I don't even pay attention to the news any more. The American media hasn't done any serious war reporting since Vietnam, and if you believe they're ever giving you an accurate picture (pro or con), you're delusional. On the other hand, I don't trust other sources (like the one linked) to be amazing unbiased sources either.

The only stories I listen to are the ones from my brother and my friends who are actually there.

Bad things happen. Good things happen. It's a horrible place to be, Americans don't always do the right thing, but they're not evil either.

How many troops have you actually talked to?

I know my brother's unit takes its peacekeeping job very seriously. They understand that you can't have peace if the people don't trust you, and they're working to earn it.

Are all of our soldiers well-educated, thoughtful people who understand why they're being shot at? Of course not. Not everyone understands that you can reduce the violence by dealing with the root of the causes instead of just reacting to it.

But there are definitely soldiers there that are trying to make the best of a bad situation.

This is true DaveOT.
I commend a soldier for taking such a dangerous route to peace in such a chaotic environment.
However, it is escalating over there. We see this even from what little our media shows us. It is also true to say that when you are being shot at continously and see you comrades fall the normal human mind cant help but feel resentment. Abu Gharib is in no way the last example of torture and inhumanity that will take place in this war. We have grunts who have been on the field for long periods of time and are simply fed up. I believe it is necessary for us civilians to realize the soldier is not meant for nation building. The soldier is meant to kill period.
