i'm not having any problems with it, but it has some major competition coming up

Google came out of the gate strong 1.5 years ago and AJAXed their email all to hell, blowing Yahoo and Hotmail out of the water, but since then we have not seen any significant improvements or features. Meanwhile Yahoo and MS have been working hard and are set to re-take the ease of use and killer-features crown back unless Google starts showing us some new stuff.

I hate all the flashy shit and formatting that gmail has added

give me back my simple text-only replies

I really dislike not having folders. I also suggested an "everything but" filter, ie, I want to turn off a group of emails but I can't do that. Did they implement that? Hell no.

Outlook has some of the best email filtering I have seen.

well, if you really miss having your folders, then you may just want to wait for the new Yahoo. Then you can have all your Gmail forwarded to Yahoo, which basically looks like Outlook inside a browser (yes, i know, Oddpost did this first, and was bought by Yahoo, etc etc etc)

The one major detractor from Gmail is the fact that they group messages by subject line!! How fucking dumb is that? I don't know how many times I've gotten emails that are completely unrelated grouped in the same conversation. Once they fix that I might be ok, but it is kind of pissing me off that they dont just add a "break from conversation" option...how fucking hard would that be

^agreed.

same problem sometimes happens with "quoted text" being hidden in the body of a message.

they don't need to "fix" that option
i rather like it
i mean, how hard is it to start a new conversation if you're tired of the subject line

that's not the problem. Sometimes a conversation will be archived (as in, not showing up in your inbox) and then a reply from someone will get grouped with the conversation (in the archive). You would never know that a reply was there unless you went looking through the archive.

dig?

^ bingo. This, and the fact that it is noticeably slower now than a year ago, which I guess can be attributed to the surge in popularity. (that and all those fucks using Gmail as a storage system)

how do you get it so that it refreshes on your outlook AND gmail (via the internet). Like if I check through Outlook it doesn't mark it as unread on my gmail when i check it via gmail.com and vice versa.

Yeah, if someone replies to an archived email in my account, the entire email comes back into the inbox.

back to the Gmail vs. Yahoo vs. Desktop -

Jeremy Zawodny is going to do a 30 day webmail face off where he exclusively uses Gmail and the new Yahoo Mail beta instead of any desktop clients. Granted, he is one of the more Famous Yahoo employees so he may be a bit biased, but he has shown himself to be quite impartial in the past and has been a fan of Gmail vs. Yahoo's current offering, and has railed against his employeer on issues such as software bundling. so it will be interesting to see the conclusions he draws.

http://jeremy.zawodny.com/blog/archives/005437.html

and here's a more thorough look into Yahoo Mail beta, but no mention of how to get invites

I have come across the "oops" thing once or twice.

Considering how often my company's email goes down, I'm impressed with gmail's "uptime".

I have a friend with a gmail account that cannot send me email. For whatever reason, the gmail server that attempts to send his email is unable to make a connection to my mail server. Nobody else I know with gmail has had this problem, only him. Anybody else run into this?

i'll be damned....

My father-in-law has a huge spam/porn email problem with his ISP email account. So i thought I'd be the savior of the day when I created him a gmail account, set up all his ISP email to be forwarded to gmail, then download his gmail into Thunderbird. So I thought Gmail would be able to filter out all the spam/porn before he downloaded it. Apparently not - check this out. You can see that about 75% of the mail in his inbox is spam. WTF - how hard is it to filter out a mail with the subject "little cute babe getting wild assfuck"

I currently have this problem sending to hotmail, yahoo, and uncc account (a friend and my gf). It works fine when I send something from my gmail to my gmail/hotmail/ncsu accounts, though. *shrug* It IS pretty annoying. There are no "mail cannot be delivered" warnings or anything, either.

nah - it's his stupid ISP email address. I think they sell all their customers addresses or something.
I thought that when it was forwarded to Gmail though, gmail would filter all the shit out. I never get spam in my inbox, but he's still getting flooded with it.

that'd be me. it's useless for email so i might as well make 50 different accounts and keep files for projects there when i'm feeling lazy.

maybe. i used it for quite a while and really wanted it to work out since i wasn't big on anything else and it seemed like it had potential, but it turns out it doesn't. from anecdotal evidence i've seen it's about a 50/50 split on whether or not people like it for actual communication purposes, but everybody can agree it's a great place to dump files.
