Is it possible for a computer to be incompatible with a wireless PCI card?

I just tried to install a Trendnet Wireless G card in my old compaq deskpro PII 400 (1998) with 256mb of ram (running windows xp) and it just won't work.

Code 10.

Do you have to disable on board ethernet?

The PCI/ISA slots are located on a riser which I think is the problem, but I can't be sure.

I tried to install the card in my desktop, but it's a bitch to switch all the settings.

The old machine has everything that needs to be on (Wireless Zero Config, etc..) functioning.

Should I just give up trying to get this machine hooked up?
