Assuming the world stays pretty static until we get done, one way or the other, with Iraq, then I'd say North Korea absolutely has to go. In the long run, it'll be easier, too. Their ideology will melt away pretty fast when we start showing them the fancy things that people all over the world have access to that they don't, like food, for starters. Yeah, those first few days with all the artillery and the possible nukes will suck, but after that it wouldn't be too bad. The First Korean War wouldn't have sucked nearly as much if the commies were all this half-starved and unequipped, and if they couldn't effectively lie to the populace with promises of good things to come.

I would say Iran, but I can't imagine a war sucking much harder than that one. All the terrain difficulties of Afghanistan with all the crazy person difficulties of Iraq and the size of both combined? Fuck that shit. If it gets way too uppity, bomb it all the time, load that bitch with propaganda, give every disgruntled Iranian whose ideas have a passing resemblance to being in our interest a gun and hope for the best.

Bad, but not as bad as you make it out.

Korea has a big army, but a shitty and outdated one. For a while, we wouldn't have to do much by way of invading the North -- use the areas in which we have overwhelming advantage (namely, in the air and in the cruise missile department) to eliminate that oft-dicussed artillery threat, shoot down any planes that they do manage to get in the air, and just let the communists break themselves on our defenses. Assuming that we intend to start the mess, those defenses should be quite a bit more formidable than they are now.

In the meantime and afterwords, what propaganda has made, let propaganda unmake. The North is supposedly fanatical in its ideology, but then, so were the Germans and Japanese. With the slightest bit of self restraint to keep our boys from repeating mistakes in Iraq and Vietnam, the hearts and minds battle in a Second Korean War offers us several advantages:

1) Any force crossing into the North can consist largely of well-placed and conspicuous Korean units, to minimize the "American imperialist syndrome."
2) There is already a functioning government in the South, so the touchier parts of nation-building (ie, institution-building) are handled.
3) By a lot of what I'm hearing -- and if you can refute it, please do -- the situation in the North is pretty fucking bad. So as long as we don't repeat this naked-pyramid or village-burning bullshit, we don't have to work really hard to do better than the current leadership.
