Has anyone here ever done anything like this? I had the idea when I was whistling along to one of my favorite songs. I thought that if I could rewire one of those acoustic tuners (guitar and such) to recognize certain keys coming in from the microphone that I could wire it to control another device through MIDI, esentially allowing me to control a keyboard or sound module just by whistling, thereby freeing up one of my hands, I'd have to learn how to whistle on key, and velocity and aftertouch would be impossible, but it would still be cool as hell. I tried to google it, but to no avail, so I thought maybe someone here would have some idea on how to get started or some sort of writings on this subject to help me out. 10/3/2005 9:41:36 PM |

That would be incredibly complicated if you've never done any electrical work, but you can buy devices like this (my eight track has it built in). 10/3/2005 9:44:02 PM |

Can you buy devices that actually have MIDI output from some kind of microphone? I know I'd have no problem making a basic MIDI output circuit, it's getting the messages from the tuner that worries me.
I'm not wanting to make like a full blown wind midi controller, that would kind of defeat the purpose, I just want to control it by simple sounds.

Is a possibility.
The typical audio input (analog) is a waveform and this is just one product that will convert wave audio data into MIDI.

If you know electronics hoodoo I suppose you could use the signal it sends to the display to figure out what the notes are. 10/3/2005 10:05:16 PM |

yeh its possible. just get a good microprocessor w/ a good ADC and your set. once you extract the frequencey of the input, use a look up table to translate to MIDI. 10/4/2005 10:12:34 AM |

these programs that do it look pretty cool, but it doesn't really help me to do it in a studio environment, I have no need for more hand as I can record into a MIDI sequencer
this tool would be more for live use. 10/5/2005 3:11:33 PM |
