unless it uses HD-DVD discs, it's not an HD machine.

upconverting is not the same.

i know that they sell the upconverting HDMI players from samsung and LG at bestbuy, why not check them out?

They have varying results but do make non-hd dvds look better on hdtvs. Honestly though, they are a waste of money since you'll want to get a real hd player which will be coming out shortly (x-mas time for hd-dvd and early/mid 2006 for blue-ray). If the companies have any intellegence they will include upconversion with the hd players.

By the way, samsung might be releasing a player capable of reading both blue-ray and hd-dvd which would be excellent if they follow through, but it wouldn’t be out until next year some time.

Your results will definitely vary even with the same player, from tv to tv. It looks pretty good, but a lot of the 1st gen products are buggy. I would recommend just waiting.

Thanks for the info, I didn't think dvd-hd was so close. BTW, there is a blu-ray burner / reader on ebay, kinda cool:

Either way, theyve both been postponed to 2006 after originally going for a late 2005 date. Personally, I would avoid both technologies...its basically VHS vs Betamax Redux, they are completely incompatible with each other, so youll have to buy BOTH players in order to play any movie available, as soon studios have already sided with Blu-Ray while other studios will be releasing HD-DVDs. Both are also rumored to have some very big brother like copy protection, requiring a phone line in order to verify you have a legit disc over the internet (just wait until a company losses rights to a movie you own or goes out of business). Although there are still early adopters that will buy both machines, many of them are also holding off...these things arent going to come down in price for a long time. Add to that the fact that DVD hasnt even been out for 10 years yet, and youve got a market thats just not ready for high definition DVD players...as much as we would like to think it is. Its very possible these formats will be DOA...or at least it will take a long time before they find any life.

I have an upconverting HD-Dvd player. It makes a BIG difference. But remember, you cant increase quality or clairity of original film, but it does seem to brighten up some colors.

another problem I anticipate these HD-DVD formats encountering is the ever-plummeting cost of magnetic storage... and the scratch-immue, always-on convenience of a large-ish RAID-5 array backed by Usenet alt.binaries.hdtv is going to beat the ever-loving fuck out of BD/HD DVD as far as functionality, so I'd personally be willing to pay somewhat more per GB for it.
