so a week ago my computer crashed and now it wont even turn on. its a dell desktop and it says something like this when i try to turn it on:

it comes to a black screen and tells me to insert a boot disk (theres more to it just cant remember exactly what it says) then when i try to reinstall windows it tells me something like i dont have any hard disks installed onto my computer. does ANYONE have any idea of what is wrong, how to fix it, or how much it would cost to get fixed?

sounds like your hard drive might have crashed. best way to tell is just get a hard drive that you know is good (ie, borrow from friend), swap them out and try to boot your machine. if all is good, then you know your hard drive is fried. the bad new is that your data is gone and it's probably not coming back. the good news is that it's a pretty cheap fix -- you can get a decent hard drive (30-40 gigs) for $40 or less. if you have are going to want to store a lot of movies or mp3s then step up to 80 gigs (or more) and you'll pay a bit more. if this is indeed the problem, it's a 10 minute fix and you can do it yourself. and it's easy to test and see if that's what's wrong. if swapping in another drive doesn't fix your problem then you've got other issues.

I mean, I'd make sure the shit was connected right before I went buying a new one.

just swap the hard drive out with one that you know is working. it's a five minute exercise and it'll let you know for sure whether or not your hard drive is the problem.
