I've got a 733 or 700 or 7something mhz celeron i use as a server... could i swap out the heatsink+fan for a fanless heatsink without frying it? it's pretty loud compared to my main pc which is almost silent. 10/18/2005 4:06:28 PM |

try replacing the fan itself or if it's one of the weird OEM heatsinks, replace it with a normal socket 370 heatsink and buy one of the adjustable speed fans from zalman.
I would be wary of running it fanless though. I've very rarely seen any CPU 500MHZ or faster without some form of active cooling on it. 10/18/2005 4:10:52 PM |

if you can get good airflow thorugh the case, you might try getting a high flow low noise case fan and just use a heatsink.
works well enough for my p4 2.4 10/18/2005 4:18:11 PM |

I had a fan go bad on my old socket 370 P3 866mhz. The fan on the $12 fan i got form compusa was kinda loud so i took the fan off. Its been running fine with the bare heats sink for months now. even with games and autocad, etc

^ Not all processors are created equal. Some processors will melt themselves even with a "low" clockspeed. Cooling needs will change with every class, core and speed of CPU.

^intels have been proven more stable than amd by far due to their larger surface area on the core, so it's not suprising that an intel can run fine without a fan...
tho i agree with rogue, get an adjustable fan controller from zalman, or if you want just try a basic dual ball bearing fan, chances are your current fan is sleeve bearing 10/18/2005 8:25:20 PM |
