im thinking that my diff is shot it's an lsd and it still gets going well and i dont notice any lag problems, just it rattles when i get going, especially in first gear the sound is coming from the rear diff. not the transmission.

you could try putting some redline gear oil in there. Shit's expensive though.

huh? if you hear it in first gear and its not noticeable other wise i would say its tranny.

man i dunno. have u pulled the cover to see if there are any shavings in the lube or anything? i'd check that first and redline is really good. i used to get a clunk from 1st to 2nd and i put redline in and it usually doesn't do it now, only when i get on it hard.

in 1st it's bad bc that's when the diff is getting moving, as you get up to 5th gear it's not as bad but it's still there. so it's the diff not the tranny im sure of it.

i know, i was just sharing my experience i had had w/ redline, even though mine was tranny fluid and yours will be diff fluid, if you choose to get it.

yeah i used redline on my celica's tranny and it worked great. ill prob just upgrade to an lsd and use 300zx half shafts if it comes down to getting a new rear diff. i know a guy that has an lsd for sale for 150.

Are you sure its not just that your suspension bushings are shot? My friend's 240 makes all sorts of noises back there, and they are all due to suspension slop.

^ my friend had bad bushings on his 240 (not sure which ones) but it was most noticeable when he hit the brakes... the car would shake pretty bad, and it wasn't the brakes. He switched to urethane bushings and that did the trick.

^ that's exactly what i thought

If its not a VLSD then just get one. check ebay and carolina nissans, and 240sxforums, etc.

when was the last time you changed the oil in it? how many miles on the gearset in there?

pull the cover, inspect everything, check backlash and carrier bearings, refill with some decent gl5 and lim slip additive, see if it still happens.

if its shot, redline aint gonna fix it. may help, but a bandaid at best.

ok it's not the rear diff i filled it up with 80w 90 or some crap that was recommended to me. it turns out it was never the rear diff in the first place, oh well at least i changed the fluid on it anyways (oh it wasnt an lsd like the guy said if i spin one tire one way the other goes the opposite way, say hello to the world of open diffs)

i never revved the car in neutral to hear what it sounded like bc i jumped to the conclusion that it was the diff. well it's not when the car is revved in neutral about 2500-3000 the car makes the rattling sound especially when letting off the gas. i cant hear it in the engine compartment and the engine is running fine, i hear it where the tranny sits.

what could it be..

ill change the fluid in that tomorrow, the syncros still work great on the tranny and i havent noticed any probs except the stick does wabble a lot when driving.

thanks guys

haha yeah first time i changed the diff fluid in a car it wasnt that bad at all just pouring it in was a bitch . ill replace the tranny fluid tomorrow for just the hell of it although i've done that before.

i was thinking about swapping out for an lsd, but i need to find half shafts for an na 300zx and it seems like a little project getting that diff to come out of their the way it is bolted up, ill save that for another day, i found an lsd for my car for 150 not bad.

you know they make gear oil pumps so you don't have to pour it in right?

For the hydraulic clutch, yes.

For the tranny?? Heavens, no. GL5 gear oil is what you want to use. Preferrably synthetic.

alright replaced the fluid for the hell of it and bought the pump while i was at it. the fluid that was taken out was pretty old and black.

I didnt really think this would fix the rattling and hence it is still occurring. i unbolted the exhaust to make sure it wasnt that (took off hangers) and it still rattles

the rattle sounds like when ur in too low of a gear trying to get up hill on a manual. it's something like that and it does occur in neutral while stopped. it is coming from the rear of the car where the tranny etc is.

no clutch doesnt have to be in when revved up in neutral it does it at either times whether the clutch is in or not, sorry for the confusing statements at the beginning of the posts.

oh it is . as for the motors im guessing it's just some kind of fuse since they both went out at the same time. ill check that this weekend.

i know i can manually pop them up if wanted too much of a pain ill just leave them popped
