So it appears i have virus or a technical problem that won't allow me to run a virus scan. I tried uninstalling what I had and then I went to NCSU's website and downloaded the antivirus program again and the problem persists saying that it has been interupted during installation. try downloading and running a program called "stinger" in safemode. about a 50% chance it'll catch whatever virus you have (since it doesn't catch all of them, but it does get some of the most common) and I think stinger was just updated recently. Also, call 515-help. They can get a resnet technician out to your room to troubleshoot it for you. Getting your antivirus program up and running is in fact one of the things they do most often and are most experienced at. 10/25/2005 3:03:22 PM |

Did you go through all of the correct removal steps when uninstalling antivirus before trying to re-install? I remember the NCSU website said something about having to do a few more things then just uninstall to get it fully off your computer. 10/25/2005 3:06:13 PM |

you could give nonav a try before reinstalling.
it blows away all NAV related reg edits and files

I just fixed someones pc who was doing this exact thing
heres what you need to do
1) reboot pc, press F8 right after it restarts, before it gets into windows
2) when the menu comes up select "safe mode with networking"
3) after you get into safe mode, go to the following websites and run a couple of these online virus scanners linked below
4) after you scan for and remove any viruses present, reboot machine normally, log into windows and remove symantec antivirus and any other mentions of it in the add remove programs box (found in the control panel)
5) run the nonav application found at the link above and completely remove the program
6) reinstall symantec antivirus...and you should be good

Yes, synapse is right. Almost always, whenever a Symantec installation fails in this way, there is some virus or spyware on the system preventing it from installing properly.
Remove the malware first, then it should reinstall perfectly fine.
