Basically. Was also wondering if pryderi's head would explode if his earlier thread became a reality, since it would simultaneously give the GOP a fighting chance in 2008 *and* boost Bush's job approval by 10 points over night...

And after reading this:

http://www.nytimes.com/2005/10/25/politics/25leak.html

I wouldn't be surprised if it's in the works

^^ Explain how this would reflect well on the GOP's chances in '08, or boost Bush's approval at all.

With respect to the GOP in 2008, it's the same as the NCGOP in 2004 -- without a clear front-runner, Republicans tend to viciously attack each other over philosophical issues and then fail profoundly after the primaries (Democrats, by contrast, generally agree on philosophy and squabble over tactics instead...far less bloody politically).

Anyone who seriously doubts Hillary won't capture the Democratic nomination if she decides to run is deluding themselves; the GOP's only hope is a clear-cut candidate.

As for W's approval numbers, it would instantly signal to the wobblies in his base that negative things like the Miers nomination / the CIA leak "scandal" (to the extent anyone knows/cares about it) / etc were all really part of some W Master Plan now coming to fruition. At which point the previous attacks on his judgment would be replaced with "Oh, so that's what he was thinking".

Cheney's involvement gives them a clear front-runner for '08?

I must be confused.

[no], making Rice the VP gives them a clear front-runner for 2008. There are 2 parts to the conspiracy here...

Rice as President?

Ok.

Now I know Republicans really have no hope.

I'm genuinely curious how many ads you can make using "I will not run for president of the United States. How is that? I don't know how many ways to say 'no' in this town" or "I don't know how many ways to tell people that I have no interest in being a candidate for anything. ... No."

C'mon man, I swear you're slipping in your old age

You know as well as I do that something as rare as a VP stepping down would be all Rice needs to explain away the "I'm not interested" comments

You make it sound like the pro-choice thing would outweigh the fact it's Rice...especially when all the names dropped as possible front-runners are either also pro-choice (Giuliani / McCain), gun-grabbers (Giuliani / McCain), tax-hikers (McCain / Pataki), flip-floppers (Frist) or have other issues (Gingrich / Romney / Jeb Bush / Cheney if he doesn't resign).

A lot can change in 2 years of course, but the only one anyone's mentioned not on that list (short of a complete dark horse) is George Allen. And at this point Rice has him beat on name ID and network alone...and you know she'd name a pro-life VP to shore up the base.

The 2008 nominee could be pro choice easily, survey usa did poll recently of SC republicans and only a little over half are still pro-life.

"CHENEY INDICTED IN FRANCE?

Monday, October 24, 2005 - FreeMarketNews.com

by staff reports
In the context of all the indictments, both impending and already served, concerning PlameGate, it may seem overkill to consider what other countries are up to. However, according to a report on Uruknet.org, there is a distinct possibility that a French court might indict U.S. Vice President Dick Cheney, on charges of bribery, money laundering and misuse of corporate assets.

The issue involves a $6 billion gas liquification factory, built in Nigeria on behalf of oil mammoth Shell by Halliburton - the company Cheney headed before becoming Vice President - and in partnership with Technip, a large French petroengineering company. The story says Judge Renaud van Ruymbeke, a renowned French jurist, has been probing the Nigeria deal since last October.

According to accounts in the French press, it says, Judge van Ruymbeke believes that some or all of $180 million in so-called secret "retrocommissions" paid by Halliburton and Technip were, in fact, bribes given to Nigerian officials and others to grease the wheels for the refinery's construction. - ST

"Vice President Cheney and his chief of staff, I. Lewis "Scooter" Libby, overruling advice from some White House political staffers and lawyers, decided to withhold crucial documents from the Senate Intelligence Committee in 2004 when the panel was investigating the use of pre-war intelligence that erroneously concluded Saddam Hussein had weapons of mass destruction, according to Bush administration and congressional sources.

Among the White House materials withheld from the committee were Libby-authored passages in drafts of a speech that then-Secretary of State Colin L. Powell delivered to the United Nations in February 2003 to argue the Bush administration's case for war with Iraq, according to congressional and administration sources. The withheld documents also included intelligence data that Cheney's office -- and Libby in particular -- pushed to be included in Powell's speech, the sources said.

The new information that Cheney and Libby blocked information to the Senate Intelligence Committee further underscores the central role played by the vice president's office in trying to blunt criticism that the Bush administration exaggerated intelligence data to make the case to go to war."
