Quote : | "LATEST NEWS Triangle Business Journal - 9:32 AM EDT Wednesday Raleigh Planning Commission gives OK to Crabtree tower The Raleigh Planning Commission on Tuesday gave nearly unanimous approval to a proposed 42-story tower beside Crabtree Valley Mall that would be the city's tallest building.
The Soleil Group of Cary has proposed a 480-foot-tall glass tower that would contain a luxury hotel, condominiums, office space, a ballroom and spa. The Planning Commission's approval moves consideration of the project to the City Council, where more resistance is expected.
Mayor Charles Meeker and some council members have expressed reservations about having such a tall building erected outside of downtown. There also have been concerns raised about a four-star hotel competing with a four-star Marriott to be built downtown next to the new convention center. The Marriott project also was approved Tuesday.
At 480 feet, the Glen-Tree tower would be more than 30 feet taller than Raleigh's current tallest building, the BB&T/Two Hannover Square building downtown.
Glen-Tree is to be built at the abandoned Sheraton Hotel across Creedmoor Road from Crabtree Valley mall at Glenwood Avenue." |

yay!! yet another way to bring more traffic to an already severely crowded intersection!!!!
they better redo that whole strip of glenwood from creedmoor to the beltline before they build that thing. it already takes 15 mins to get from creedmoor to the beltline during rush hour. 10/26/2005 12:02:15 PM |

Yeah build that shit downtown. We don't have a lot of tall buildings, might as well put them all in one place to give us at least a half way decent skyline.
I mean, Winston-Salem has a better skyline than Raleigh 10/26/2005 12:02:53 PM |

yeh..downtown would have been a much better place for it. there needs to be more tall office buildings and whatnot down there. especially if that metro gets built.. 10/26/2005 12:02:59 PM |

a more impressive skyline. on a good clear night, you can see downtown raleigh from as far away as hodge road in knightdale (on the eastern side). and if they stuck another tall building down there, hopefully it could invite some of its friends and we could finally sack up and start competing with charlotte. 10/26/2005 12:11:04 PM |

that's a really bad reason, when the economic climate of downtown clearly will not support it, which is why it's being located where it is... proximity to the RBC center, as well as an upscale mall. 10/26/2005 12:16:27 PM |

downtown would not be able to support this building. Crabtree with its location and the things around it will be perfect. The property will be cheaper also; vers downtown. 10/26/2005 12:20:52 PM |

i dont understand how this project got approval, yet any proposal of a decent size downtown is objected to so strongly. all the money going into building a new convention center, and all the business travelers they want to bring here, yet no decent sized hotel to house them?
and yeah, glenwood traffic could do without this. 10/26/2005 12:30:46 PM |

it may be old, but it's still more upscale than southpoint or TTC, and bringing in more and more such shops. This new hotel will only further facilitate that. 10/26/2005 12:31:25 PM |

I guess I just don't like North Raleigh. Glenwood is turning into Capital Blvd, I've gotten to where I hate driving on either of them equally. A 42 story building beside a 2-3 story mall is gonna look odd.
Southpoint is much nicer than Crabtree will ever be unless they do some serious renovations to it.
Doesn't matter what I think though, sounds like the city has already made up their mind to proceed with this abomination of a project. 10/26/2005 12:37:58 PM |

A local company wants to do millions of dollars worth of business in Raleigh and all people can think about is how they won't be helping the skyline. This ain't charity work folks. They are going to put it wherever they think they can make the most money. 10/26/2005 12:39:57 PM |

there are a tremendeous amount of prodjects about to begin in downtown. there is around 3 billion in investment towards it. Think of downtown raleigh as being like charlotte 15- 20 years ago. Don't write it off yet. These prodjects will do nothing but spark new ones.
There is a large tower in the works for downtown, it will be for a large bank

I know CSFB is investing heavily in this area, but AFAIK, that was only going to be in RTP. I've also read that Wells Fargo wants to have a larger east coast presence, but haven't heard anything specific.

Not to burst peoples bubbles but uh... Charlotte, though nice skyline, has one of the worst fucking road systems I've ever seen. That shit was put together by some blind retard having an epileptic seizure.
Raleigh, thought suffering from similar issues, does make sense overall downtown if you look at the overall picture and traffic flow.
The only issues I'm worried about in Raleigh are what others mentioned, with the traffic flow currently on glenwood by Crabtree. I leave at 4pm everyday and it's already bad. I've been through it once or twice at 5:30... jesus christ.
Plus that's mostly caused by backed up traffic on 440 because of the bottleneck between wade ave and 40/440.
Not to mention that hillsborough st will be changed to no lights and those roundabouts which will cause traffic to have to take other routes.
I honestly believe if they would take care of that bottleneck it would solve a LOT of issues in the area. They need to add 1 more land all the way through. And change the western blvd entrance ramp to not join on the left side. Kmart has an entire acre of parking lot it doesn't use that could be expanded into to allow the space. 10/26/2005 3:29:39 PM |

I'm surprised it passed, but pleased at the same time. It is rather odd siting, but the design looks promising. I do feel bad for the neighborhoods that will be in its shadow though...
And downtown is not getting left behind. Besides the new mariott, there are also plans on the table for a 30+ story building to go up across from the Radisson on Hillsborough.
I do question how a 42-story building will only be 30 feet taller than a 32-story building (two Hanover). 10/26/2005 3:49:45 PM |
