Pack's McCargo may not return
Tackle had surgery on left foot Friday

By CHIP ALEXANDER, Staff Writer

RALEIGH -- N.C. State coach Chuck Amato said Sunday that he is not sure if defensive tackle John McCargo, a potential All-ACC candidate, will be able to return this season.
McCargo, a 6-foot-2, 295-pound junior and the Pack's most consistent defensive lineman this year, underwent surgery Friday for a stress fracture in his left foot. Amato said it was "too early to tell" when McCargo might be able to return.

"It depends on how it heals," Amato said. "There's a chance we might get him back before the season is over. Time will tell."

Playing without McCargo, the Wolfpack rallied for a 21-17 win Saturday over Southern Miss, which finished with 246 yards in total offense. Defensive end Mario Williams, who had a school-record four sacks, wore McCargo's shoulder pads in the game as a show of respect.

Amato said freshman tailback Andre Brown, a former Greenville Rose High star who rushed for 248 yards in the victory, would get his first start this Saturday when the Pack (3-4, 1-4 ACC) plays ninth-ranked Florida State (7-1, 4-1) in a 3:30 p.m. game in Tallahassee, Fla.

Amato said McCargo does not know how or when his injury occurred. McCargo played extensively in State's loss at Wake Forest on Oct. 22.

"It started bothering him halfway back on the bus trip," Amato said. "He had treatment last Sunday, and I didn't know anything was terribly wrong until late Monday afternoon.

"They said it might be a stress fracture, and we got another scan. We felt [surgery] was the best thing to do."

Sophomore DeMario Pressley and junior Tank Tyler started at the tackles against Southern Miss. Sophomore Martrel Brown rotated in as a third tackle.

Williams has moved inside to tackle at times this season when senior end Renaldo Moses is used. That's another option for the Pack, although Williams has been at his best at left end the last two games.

The 6-foot-7, 290-pound junior had three sacks at Wake Forest, then added four against USM. Williams said the defensive line was challenged before the Wake game by Amato and the coaching staff to be more productive.

"They said I was not making any plays, or not doing this or doing that," Williams said Saturday. "Coach Amato really got on me and said, 'Show them how good you are. Cut it loose.'"

Williams was credited with a season-high 11 hits against Southern Miss, including six tackles for losses.

"We're starting to play more like a family, just playing hard," Williams said. "... The season isn't over with. We can win out."

Shit.

When everything else is finally coming together (penalties!), we lose one of our best players.

If you are looking for a positive....This probably means he will be here for his senior year...This may prevent him from going in the draft.

As much as I don't want to see him leave this year, it's his best chance. Without Manny and Mario next year, he and Tyler won't be able to anchor the line themselves.

actually, FSU's o-line has been taking a lot of heat this year. Of course thats what they said about the UNC o-line before they tore us a new one.

Didn't McCargo line up offsides for a lot of those?

um no. he might have one penalty on the season. but most if not all of those offsides came against the ends.

so. miss. is not that bad. its hardly an elite win, but its still quality. it was an ugly win BY a bad team, not OVER a bad team.

^ it's not so much that it's bad so much as the lack of depth will make 'em wear down faster

I didn't realize Mario had 7 sacks in the last two games. I am glad to see he is finally playing like he is worth a crap this year.

I doubt Mario will be gone after this year

even if he is McCargo, Tyler and Pressley will be a pretty stout D-Line
