looks like the old thread expired a day or two ago
but Yahoo has beta released their answer to Google Maps/Virtual Earth and it's impressive so far - http://maps.yahoo.com/beta/ The interface is very sleek looking, albiet a bit cluttered compared to GMaps, which is to be expected from Yahoo. But some of the functionality and how smoothly you can interact with the interface makes GMaps look primitive (probably just like the new Yahoo/Hotmails will make Gmail look primitive). Multidestination directions are a breeze to create and the mouseover of the map components is very very nice.
They have several features integrated that you have to search for or use a mash-up to see the same in GMaps. You can select from a number of categories to show locations on the map, and it has a very nice integration with Yahoo traffic already. This is of course, a slippery slope - i.e. they have to be very careful not to put so much options that would make it unusable, but it looks/works very nice so far.
Of course, it's mostly based on the MacroMedia Flex Flash platform instead of pure AJAX, so it's bound to look "shinier" and have even better smooth-scrolling features. So whether you like flash or not or think it's "cheating", this is certainly a nice flash application. more links and commentary here - http://jeremy.zawodny.com/blog/archives/005616.html

now on yahoo if you append the word "trailer" to a movie title, the top results will be direct links to view that movie trailer. I'm not sure if it works for all movies, or if some studios have deals with yahoo, but that's pretty nice to find a trailer instead of searching around on other movie sites. 11/23/2005 4:17:09 PM |

You can create customizable "open shortcuts" for yahoo search, which basically give you search shortcuts. e.g.
Quote : | "To use an Open Shortcut, you type ! (exclamation point) followed by the name of the shortcut in the Yahoo! Search box. For example, type: !ebay lamps. This takes you directly to http://www.ebay.com and searches for lamps." |

Yahoo Maps adds satellite coverage for whole world, and hybrid coverage for US. I guess i kind of forgot that Yahoo didn't have imagry till now since MS and Google have for so long already. The image detail varies with plenty of conflicting blog posts of "i can see my house better in [name your employer's mapping service]". Looks like some cities have more resolution in Yahoo, and some in Google, and some in MS. But the minimum imagery is much much better in Yahoo than in Google. They have a minimum of 15meters/pixel for the whole world, giving beatiful, fully colored overhead shots of the entire globe, where Google gives you a patchwork of various resolution pictures when zoomed all the way out.

for anyone that still uses yahoo.com or my.yahoo.com or whatever, you've probably noticed the major redesign. Here's a review of new features - http://www.readwriteweb.com/archives/exclusive_new_y.php
the little Personal Assistant in the top right is pretty slick - it has nice AJAX slide-out boxes to give you quick access to lots of information that can normally be hidden. 5/16/2006 1:43:21 PM |

yahoo has thrown its hat in the ring with YouTube and Google Video and updated their video search site to allow uploaded videos http://video.yahoo.com/
Asa already has a pretty comprehensive review - http://weblogs.mozillazine.org/asa/archives/2006/06/yahoo_video_now.html I agree with him that this is the most attractive (as far as asthetics) of all the services so far, but it sounds like it's still lacking some functionality. And this is the first service that combines the user uploaded video search with an internet wide video search, which is what Yahoo Video previously only was. 6/2/2006 9:26:27 AM |

the new Yahoo Photos has been rolled out to everyone, instead of just beta testers. I never used it before, but the new one looks very nice, and it says it has a no storage limit, so that's sweet. It has a pretty nice interface, except a bit too bubbly and too many ads, but functional and attractive, with of course lots of AJAXy goodness. It has drag and drop support too, to move pictures/albums around and to upload pictures. Unfortunately, all the pictures i tried to add failed on upload, so I couldn't really test it out. But it has Smart Albums built in, and look like good support for Albums and Tags, instead of attempting to force people to use one or the other (Picasa, iPhoto). http://new.photos.yahoo.com/ 8/21/2006 1:23:46 PM |

yeah, what ^ said. I have no affiliation with Yahoo, Google, MS, or Apple - i just like it when companies put out good, innovative products. I think there is healthy competition for internet applications right now, and I think it's good to see Yahoo, Google and MS at each others throats trying to one-up each other. And these companies put out products and updates at such a fast rate, most people aren't even aware of them (e.g. outside our own little tech/internet fantasy world most of us live in, most people haven't even heard of Google Maps, Yahoo Maps, or MS Live Local (Maps) - they still think mapquest is the only available option). Even if you are aware of the big new products (like Mail, Maps, Desktop searchers), most tech-people still never know about all the incremental updates and small products that don't get any press. I'm just trying to help spread the knowledge. 9/14/2006 9:00:31 AM |

i just want to get opinions on yahoo music engine and its service. i have it, and i think the interface is slightly to slow (but in all fariness it just came out like a year ago), it doesn't recognize my burner (well i haven't tried to burn in version 2 yet), and it takes longer than average to start up. but the interface is pretty straightforward, and the service is pretty standard, and cheap, 4.99/month prepaid for a year or 6.99/month paid monthly. does anyone else use this? 9/17/2006 9:05:58 AM |

the new Yahoo Maps is out of beta - http://maps.yahoo.com/ they have clearly surpassed Google with this version as far as functionality, if not being noticeably slower (b/c it's Flash) and advertising-heavy.
The biggest features missing in Google Maps are "right click to mark", where you can specify a place on the map by right clicking, instead of entering an address, and multiple stop directions (well, Google directions feature pretty much sucks) 11/17/2006 10:45:58 AM |

Yahoo Pipes is announced today, and the product site immediately crashed from all the traffic - http://pipes.yahoo.com/
so without the site and any examples, it's hard to get a complete grasp of what it is. But from all the blogs about it, it looks to be a platform for aggregating, filtering, and manipulating data "piped" in from RSS feeds and searches, then re-formatting that data for your own use.
a lot of heady praise for it, so far. for example, from O'Reilly:
Quote : | "Yahoo!'s new Pipes service is a milestone in the history of the internet. It's a service that generalizes the idea of the mashup, providing a drag and drop editor that allows you to connect internet data sources, process them, and redirect the output. Yahoo! describes it as "an interactive feed aggregator and manipulator" that allows you to "create feeds that are more powerful, useful and relevant." While it's still a bit rough around the edges, it has enormous promise in turning the web into a programmable environment for everyone." |
