I think we will play faster than last year. Is Herb still going to use the Princeton ofense? 11/5/2005 8:57:42 PM |

incoming
(And no, we're not gonna change the offense. As much as I wish we would... we're not going to just becuase we're more athletic. I just hope we end our streaky tendencies with this offense due to a little more depth. I said I was hoping for it, not banking on it)

Nothing about our offense says you can't play fast in it.
You just don't play up-tempo when it's stupid to do so. 11/5/2005 9:06:18 PM |

Jesus don't start this shit
It's actually ridiculous. You invite people to talk shit about Herb... and when they do you complain about them talking shit about Herb.
We have all season to do that.... we don't need a warmup 11/5/2005 9:14:05 PM |

Looks like our frontcourt is ready to roll this year. If Bethel gets healthy, our backcourt will be wicked.
Should be a good year. 11/5/2005 9:51:05 PM |

PackBacker do you like Herb or not? 11/6/2005 1:43:46 AM |

I think we can have a strong finish in the ACC.
Barring injury to Redick or Shelden, everyone else is just playing for second-best though.
Having said that I'm really excited about our team. We're gonna miss Hodge's presence obviously; hopefully someone (or several people) will step it up and make their presence felt.
We could finish second... or we could finish fifth. The x-factor is the development of the froshies. 11/6/2005 1:47:28 AM |

Eh, I've been a big voice of concern over Herb.
He's got a lot to prove to me...and I dont think we can win with this offense (Too streaky, and you can't be streaky in the tourney). I personally think we rely too much on 3 pointers and get ran off the court by more athletic teams.
That said, he's earned more time here. We've gotten a lot better under Herb...no doubt. I just question whether or not he can take us back to the top... and after he leaves... the type of players he has in this offense actually hurts the next coaches chances. I'm not ready to give him the boot... I've said we needed to look around before, but after last season he has every right to stick around. I just don't get my hopes up for basketball any more... I've been too dissapointed in the past when I thought we should have been a lot better...and it's for the same reasons year after year 11/6/2005 1:48:18 AM |

I hope we finish 2nd to Duke because I dont believe they can be beat in the ACC race this year and I think we can with BC being our greatest competition. Once Bethel is back we will be 10 deep assuming all 3 freshman see minutes. I hope people are off of Herb's case now.

I hope you look at Herb the same way. Fowler made the right decision to stick with him and we are getting better each year.11/6/2005 1:50:03 AM |

Yeah, I guess I've been a little too harsh on Herb in the past.
I hope he succeeds, super guy that represents the university well. Like I said, I just wish we'd quit being such a streaky/3 point bombing team under Herb. It seems like if a team switches into Zone defense we roll over and die.
I guess time will tell. 11/6/2005 1:52:24 AM |

I have noticed this, it is very bad and usually causes one of our 5 minute droughts that we are famous for. We just stand around waiting on someone to do something. To beat a zone, it takes ball movement and good passing.11/6/2005 1:54:26 AM |

Exactly... but apparently we fail to figure that out.
Herb also has game management problems with blowing leads and such. I question his development of players as well.
I'm gonna try to be more level-headed about it all this season. I think part of that is becuase I'm numb to it all now. I hope Herb succeeds, I just feel that a lot of our problems will stick around for this season as well. He recruits well and he's a really smart guy, that just hasn't translated into a real powerful basketball team IMO.
Good teams need to be inside and outside teams. If a star is down, someone else can pick up the slack. I just haven't seen either of those under Herb.... but to his credit... I do think he would have had a few really good teams if Powell had stuck around 11/6/2005 1:58:19 AM |

If you guys have not seen Brackman or Ced yet then go to a game ASAP.
Those two look like they are ready for war, and Evtimov is sick once again. He was knocking down shots from behind the NBA mark without hesitation.
I agree with the others that have seen the team so far and say that Bethel is the one missing link, the one dude that we need to get things going. Once he gets healthy, things will get much smoother.

If you follow basketball you'd know that strong perimeter shooting destroys the zone defense. 11/6/2005 3:54:51 PM |

as does constant ball movement
but that's the thing we don't get, and instead of good, quality outside shots, we end up with poorly chosen shots with :02 on the shot clock 11/6/2005 3:56:31 PM |

^^I know. Sometimes we shoot well, but when we don't...we just seem to shut down and try to shoot our way out.
We can make our offense look like a thing of beauty, but sometimes we just look terrible. 10 points in a half is a perfect example. It just seems that if our shots aren't falling, we're out of options.
Hopefully increased talent and depth will solve that, but it's been a big problem in the past

I do think we're going to see a much more effective offense this year, because the post presence is finally there (Brack and Ced, plus McCauley off the bench).
I expect this will really address the "raining 3s" problem we've seen in the past. 11/6/2005 3:59:19 PM |

I do believe we have a better inside game with our new found size
You have to have balance to remain consistent...football or basketball. We've got the shooters, but sometimes when the shots aren't falling you have to be able to take it inside...which we haven't had since Powell. We also couldn't rebound whatsoever
I really hope you're right, and I think you just might be. We'll see 11/6/2005 4:03:03 PM |
DaveOT All American 11945 Posts user info edit post |
Yeah, I agree. That was a huge problem last year--you could tell even back in November that we were awful at rebounding, and what do you know, we had the exact same problem in March. But this year, we can run a 6'8-6'10-6'9 frontcourt, with size (and talent) waiting on the bench as well.
For the first time since Hodge got here, though, we'll be relatively weak in the backcourt. So yeah, Tony makes the difference between this being a "good" team and a "great" team.
