So I came home from work and IM was signed off. I tried to sign back on and a little window in my task bar popped up...I've since closed it, but it was some sort of AOL notification window...I dont know where it came from.
I cannot sign back on to IM, and my internet connection is sporadic...the weird thing is that I'm getting a VERY strong signal from my route. When I try to load a webpage, I'll get the message: ... Connection Test Failed
Make sure your device is connected to a telephone jack using the included phone wire. Otherwise contact your ISP. ...
What is going on here? I ran ad-aware and I tried to update Norton but I got an error message. Help 11/8/2005 5:50:48 PM |

this is seriously frustrating me...
I tried running norton and it got stuck (after 2.5 hours) on a bunch of AIM files...I uninstalled AIM then redownloaded it, but I've not yet installed it...so I dont know if that'll help the IM issue
my other issue still exists though...the internet seems like it only connects every few seconds...it takes appx 5 times of refreshing a page for anything to actually load...the rest of the time I get that "connection test failed" message
argh!!!! ideas? pleeease! 11/8/2005 9:20:26 PM |

that's happened to me before when my wireless connection was off and on
each time you try to sign on to AIM, it's going to increase the time by a few minutes
just close the application all together and get your internet working properly 11/8/2005 9:23:30 PM |

so, you use cable modem to connect. if this is the case, then you definitely have a virus / dialer of some sort. Whatever you do, DO NOT plug your computer into a phone line. period. if you do, you will have an assininely high phone bill next month. If anything, make sure that your phone-based modem is disabled by going into device manager and disabling the modem.
Next, you'll probably have to boot into safe mode and run all of your A/V software, spyware, adware programs and shit. Next, give us a HijackThis! log of your computer.
So yeah, first thing's first, assuming you are using windows, boot into safe mode and run all of your virus stuff from there. keep rebooting and running those things in safe mode until you get no more of them. That will usually solve the problem...

have you ran scans in safemode? Try downloading the free trial version of SpySweeper http://www.webroot.com/consumer/downloads/?WRSID=d6d1fe01a148ae4464b786539890a01e It seems to catch a lot of things that AdAware and other spy detectors won't catch. Hit ctrl-alt-del and see how many processes are running and what they are. Try downloading trillian for instant messaging.

JSnail, you need to offer somebody on Tech Talk like $20 (or a case of beer) to come over for an hour an fix your computer. Seems like a lot, but considering the frustration level thus far, and (guessing) the amount of time it will take to fix it, it is probably worth it. Shops will charge $30-$60 minimum. 11/9/2005 5:57:26 PM |

I ran the scans in safe-mode...only caught 1 spyware but no viruses. After rebooting, I'm still having trouble connecting to the internet (again, I think its a cable hookup...the people I'm renting from have the damn room locked that has the internet stuff in it). I still can't get AIM to install...will Trillian have my buddlist from IM? 11/9/2005 7:25:08 PM |

OK so all of a sudden I can get on the web (at least for now), but I cant connect to Trillian. And I tried to use AIM Express, and it seemed like it worked...so why isn't Trillian connecting?
And unfortunately I never was able to figure out what exactly the problem is...all I did is run ad-aware/spybotS&D/antivirus but nothing aside from the random spyware was found. 11/10/2005 8:33:59 AM |
