Wake up 35-33 over Mississippi Valley State
Geez... I figured Wake would be decent this year. What the hell happened over there. Prosser's not supposed to choke until March

Wake won.
They looked much better tonight than last week (which isn't saying much in itself). Gray did a pretty good job of moving the ball. They started spreading the ball out early, using Strickland and Drum on the perimeter, driving Gray inside, and feeding Williams and Visser at the post. They got out to a 24-10 lead that way, and then proceeded to totally fuck themselves with stupid turnovers (some of the most idiotic passes I've ever seen) that put the Devils on a 19-4 run. The second half was more consistent.
Looks like they might be grooming Hale for the PG spot--he drove to the basket on a few plays. The kid has some spark--and he was pretty good on defense too. (Speaking of defense, how many times do you have to get burned by the deep ball before you decide to switch out of a 2-3 zone?) If I were Prosser, I think I'd go ahead and let Hale start at the 1 and move Gray to the 2, so they get coordinated before conference play starts. Dukes will not be a starting guard this year, and Drum is absolutely no match for Gray on the wing. 11/10/2005 10:12:56 PM |

This was a real game too and not exhibition. Hopefully this is a sign of things to come for Wake. When it comes to bball, I hate them as much as UNC or Duke. I hated Josh Howard with a passion. Chris Paul did not help. 11/10/2005 10:19:16 PM |

I liked Paul cause I saw him play in high school...so that was kinda cool to watch him in the national spotlight. My respect level went down for him cause he played with a horrible attitude and took lots of cheap shots. Then he hit DA JULES in the nuts. enough said.
Plus wake fans are pussies and started talking shit the year Josh Howard won POY. Now they are gonna crawl back into their hole where they were for the previous 10 years that I remember them.
...see...I know state fans talk shit...thats not what I have a problem with...Its the fair weather fans. See, at NC State, we talk shit when we have horrible teams, then we lose, blame it on the coach or key player, then come back strong next year and talk shit again. If you're gonna be a fan, you gotta make an ass of yourself in good times and bad. 11/10/2005 10:27:24 PM |

He shoulda been ejected long before he got a chance to take that shot.
And we got our revenge in the ACC tournament when Hodge lit them up and glared at Paul after every time he scored. 11/10/2005 11:51:15 PM |

^^just as sweet as NC STATE going farther in the NCAA tourney than Wake did last year. All those elite players Wake had and they couldnt even make it out of the second round. IN ACC BASKETBALL IT IS ALL ABOUT THE OFFSEASON BUDDY!!! 11/11/2005 2:41:53 AM |

How did Wake Forest only beat Winston-Salem State 88-84? Surprised I never heard this before now.

Drum doesn't look bad; he hits the open shots, and that looks like all they want him to do right now.
If it was my choice, though, I'd put Gray there because he's a proven consistent shooter.11/11/2005 7:45:22 AM |

How early does State get Wake
I hope it's the ACC opener. They flat out suck as of now... and even if they get 100% better by the ACC schedule... they'll still suck 11/11/2005 9:50:54 PM |

I get the feeling Florida's going to destroy Wake next week...and I don't want that to happen yet.

the largest issue wake is going to have to deal with is that they still don't play any defense. look at these quotes from October 2004 -- just before last season began:
Chris Paul: "There is no secret to our weakness from last year which was defense. October 16 everyone should come in hungry ready to play. Its all about communication. We have to talk more and you just have to keep your man in front of you."
Skip Prosser: "Again, I don't think you have to be John Nash the mathematician to see that we were eighth in the league in blocked shots, ninth in the league in scoring defense, ninth in the league in field goal percentage defense, and ninth in the league in three point field goal percentage defense. Last year [2003-2004 season] we were a good rebounding team. In terms of ACC games we had the best rebounding differential of the nine teams in those 16 league games but I don't think we were a feared rebounding team. From an offensive standpoint, even though we scored a lot of points in a league, third in the country in scoring, led the league in points with a lot of high powered teams, we need consistency, a balance in the post. Those are some things we'll need to address right away. We should be able to score, but on those occasions where we can't score we must do a much better job of guarding and again in becoming a feared team in terms of the backcourt."
source for the quotes: http://wakeforestsports.collegesports.com/sports/m-baskbl/spec-rel/103104aad.html
for the 2004-2005 season, wake was 10th, 9th, 8th, and 9th in the conference in the stats that skip mentioned above (blocked shots, scoring defense, FG% defense, 3PT% defense). Basically no improvement over the previous year (when they were 8th, 9th, 9th, and 9th in the same categories) despite all the "renewed emphasis" on defensive intensity.
you can see these stats yourself on page 11 of wake's postseason media guide:
http://graphics.fansonly.com/photos/schools/wake/sports/m-baskbl/auto_pdf/posseasonguide2.pdf
They talked about defense a lot last year but never got any better. they were able to outscore people most of the time but were never able to come up with the key defensive stop to win big games (all I have to say about that is "Pittsnogle for three!").
If the first couple of games of this season are any indication, Wake still doesn't play any defense and they can't rely on outscoring people like the could the last two years. And what about Justin Gray at the point -- 10 (ten!) turnovers tonight.
If the defensive intensity doesn't change this year, look for Skip to bolt for the Cincy job when Andy Kennedy isn't retained after this one year experiment. 11/11/2005 10:01:52 PM |

Skip shouldn't be hired anywhere until he learns how to play defense.
You cannot win a title (or even come close to it) without D. 11/11/2005 10:08:48 PM |
