"Al-Zarqawi myth U.S.'s own creation

By Jennifer Schultz
UPI Correspondent
Published November 10, 2005

WASHINGTON -- The United States created the myth around Iraq insurgency leader Abu Musab al-Zarqawi and reality followed, terrorism expert Loretta Napoleoni said.

Al-Zarqawi was born Ahmad Fadil al-Khalayleh in October 1966 in the crime and poverty-ridden Jordanian city of Zarqa. But his myth was born Feb. 5, 2003, when then-Secretary of State Colin Powell presented to the United Nations the case for war with Iraq.

Napoleoni, the author of "Insurgent Iraq," told reporters last week that Powell's argument falsely exploited Zarqawi to prove a link between then-Iraqi President Saddam Hussein and al-Qaida. She said that through fabrications of Zarqawi's status, influence and connections "the myth became the reality" -- a self-fulfilling prophecy.

"He became what we wanted him to be. We put him there, not the jihadists," Napoleoni said."

"How US fuelled myth of Zarqawi the mastermind

By Adrian Blomfield outside Fallujah
(Filed: 04/10/2004)

Abu Musab al-Zarqawi, the terrorist leader believed to be responsible for the abduction of Kenneth Bigley, is 'more myth than man', according to American military intelligence agents in Iraq.

Several sources said the importance of Zarqawi, blamed for many of the most spectacular acts of violence in Iraq, has been exaggerated by flawed intelligence and the Bush administration's desire to find "a villain" for the post-invasion mayhem.

Zarqawi fuels his ambition with the release of a video of the beheading of Nick Berg

US military intelligence agents in Iraq have revealed a series of botched and often tawdry dealings with unreliable sources who, in the words of one source, "told us what we wanted to hear".

"We were basically paying up to $10,000 a time to opportunists, criminals and chancers who passed off fiction and supposition about Zarqawi as cast-iron fact, making him out as the linchpin of just about every attack in Iraq," the agent said.

"Back home this stuff was gratefully received and formed the basis of policy decisions. We needed a villain, someone identifiable for the public to latch on to, and we got one.""

Al-Zarqawi may actually be dead:

How many times have they said that "we almost captured him", "we're so close to capturing him", and "we just missed capturing him"? Ooooooooh, they even captured his "aides" and "top lieutenants"...and even his nephew (all right!). But they just can't seem to get this boogeyman, even when the guy has an artificial leg (no joke). Man, I think they're about to capture him right now! Seriously! They've almost got him! Then, we'll finally defeat the insurgency!

This mythical boogeyman remind you of any other supposed "al Qaeda mastermind terrorist"?

"Zarqawi's 'days are numbered' says US as hunt goes on

Nov 21, 2005

The US ambassador to Iraq said that Al-Qaeda frontman Abu Musab al-Zarqawi's days were numbered as US forces kept up the hunt for Iraq's most wanted man following rumors he had been killed.

"His days are numbered. He is going to be ultimately found," Zalmay Khalilzad said in an interview with CNN.

"Either he will be brought to justice or he will die in the battle to capture him but we are getting closer to that goal every day. A lot of coalition forces and experts are working hard on this," he said.

"It is not a question of whether but when." "

Darn! We almost got him again!! Why do we always have to get so close, but then they get away? Same thing with Osama. It's not like these "almost captured" incidents are manufactured propaganda to bring the boogeymen back in the news headlines to give the false impression that they are real threats and that the U.S. is actually trying to capture them. No way. We're really coming close to getting them all these times only to let them get away. Oh well. We're gonna get him any day now. Bet on it. Just like with Osama. Go America! Let's get the terr'ists!

^it refers to salisburyboy's conviction that the conspiracy theories about Jews, the New World Order, Illuminati, etc. are true, if you didn't catch that.

ah

I'm guessing it's ignorance and immaturity combined then.

Jordan is 75% Palestinian. Besides that, most Jordanians don't particularly favor Palestinians nor Israelis.

I think it's hard to take sarcasm to something so close to home
Maybe I'm too uptight

Shouldn't have said anything. Statement retracted.

salisburyboy,

The only thing I will say about this is you are basing your opinion from what is in the media.

No problems with that, it's all we have at times.

Trust me, Al Zarquwi is a real person and is a zealot and maniac.

He aligned himself with Al Qaida, not before the war but after because he was an outcast and refused to conform, much like all the idiot school shooters, drug dealers and outcast we have in our own society.

What most Americans don't understand however is the strength of religion in the Arab world. As Americans, we treat religion as either a guiding force or a sunday guiding force of morality.

The Iraqi's will never understand the seperation of church and State. Kurds, Turkmen and of course the larger issue of Shia and Sunni are so ingrained in the life of each person that they will not understand the tennants of Democracy, until generations support it and is passed on through the positive perception of the current family unit.

"Official: Al-Zarqawi caught, released

Authorities didn't realize prisoner was terrorist mastermind

Thursday, December 15, 2005

BAGHDAD, Iraq (CNN) -- Iraqi security forces caught the most wanted man in the country last year, but released him because they didn't know who he was, the Iraqi deputy minister of interior said Thursday.

Hussain Kamal confirmed that Abu Musab al-Zarqawi -- the al Qaeda in Iraq leader who has a $25 million bounty on his head -- was in custody at some point last year, but he wouldn't provide further details."

OOOOOHH! WE ALMOST GOT HIM AGAIN! WE'RE GONNA GET HIM SOON ENOUGH. WELL, THEY'LL AT LEAST RUN STORIES LIKE THIS PERIODICALLY TO MAKE PEOPLE BELIEVE HE REALLY EXISTS AND THAT THEY'RE TRYING TO FIND HIM. BUT THEY WON'T EVER REALLY CAPTURE HIM (LIKE WITH EVIL 'OL BIN LADEN) BECAUSE IF THEY DO, THEN THEY WON'T HAVE THEIR BOOGEYMAN ANYMORE. I'VE SAID TOO MUCH. DON'T WORRY THOUGH. WE'RE GONNA GET ZARQAWI REAL SOON! PROMISE.
