On Tuesday, Nov. 29, Bernard Hopkins will stop by to take your questions while preparing for his attempt to reclaim the middleweight title against Jermain Taylor on Dec. 3 ( HBOPPV 9 p.m. EST/6 p.m. PST). Taylor earned the title of undisputed middleweight champ by beating Hopkins in July, but the split decision left Hopkins crying foul and set up a highly anticipated rematch.
Will Hopkins prove that the first fight wasn't a passing of the torch? Does the former champ still have some tricks up his sleeve? Ask Hopkins himself, when he stops by on Tuesday, Nov. 29 at 3 p.m. ET.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Matt, Mililani, HI: How long was training camp for you bernard?
Bernard Hopkins: Six weeks.
Bernard Hopkins: Out in California
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Eddie New york,NY: What are some weaknesses that you see in Taylor
Bernard Hopkins: I see a couple of weaknesses, but I'm not going to reveal them here.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------- JT: Huntington Beach, CA: Bernard, I hope you knock this punk out. It's time for the Real Champ to be back on top.
Bernard Hopkins: Absolutely, I will.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Matt B (Philly, PA): Yo BHop...don't listen to the haters. We all believe in you. You won last time and you'll win again. Are you going to wear the mask on Sat night??
Bernard Hopkins: Big question mark.
Bernard Hopkins: Philly will be proud come Sunday morning.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Sergio - Chicago, IL: Given the fact you've fought some great fighters in the past as a defending champion, would you consider your position as a challenger for this fight the most, pardon the pun, challenging?
Bernard Hopkins: For me, I'm still stuck on July 16 as far as I believe I won. I'm going in as the champion of the people. Now I'm going to rectify a black eye on big fights in this sports. On Saturday I will rectify their mistake.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Armel, New York: Hey B-Hop! How are you doing? No matter what happens, I want to congratulate you for what you did to your life. Young people and even adults should look at you as an example. Good luck on Saturday.
Bernard Hopkins: Thank you. Thank you very much.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Mike, Boston: Nard, what will you be serving Taylor for his last meal as middleweight champ?
Bernard Hopkins: I will be serving Jermain Taylor some knuckle sandwiches.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Tulsa, OK: Bernard, I'm hoping you can regain the title this Saturday night. How many rounds do you see this rematch going in order for you to regain the title?
Bernard Hopkins: I see it going in the middle championship rounds. I see myself hurting and beating Taylor in rounds 6 or 7 and then taking him out in 9 or 10
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------- narwal ,canada : bernard now nowing that taylor does tire will you brawl early on to get taylor tired or a rope a dope where you just get taylor to assault you early and then tag him out 6 or 7 th round
Bernard Hopkins: I'll fight the same fight I fought the first fight. Only that this time when I hurt him I'll knock him out. The first fight strategy was perfect. This time I'll execute when he gets hurt.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Max Philly: You are a great role Model for all young kids who make mistakes in this world. Good luck Knock of Taylor for all of Philly you are the only champ that we have.
Bernard Hopkins: That's right. I got to represent. Philly needs a champ and I have to bring the title back. Thank you.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Matt (Boston, MA): Bernard: After you beat Taylor will you fight again, or are you sticking to your promise to never fight past 40??
Bernard Hopkins: I'm sticking to the promise. Although, I have one fight left on my three fight deal, which will be in January. I have a third fight because of Taylor not being ready in July. But I will stick to what I said. That's why you should watch this fight. Buy it.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Ray Ohrel (Newport Beach, CA): Bernard, I am a huge fan. I think your last fight was a great one, but you got robbed. Tell me, what approach are you going to take or what are you going to do different this time to make sure that doesn't happen again?
Bernard Hopkins: I never heard of anybody losing the fight after knocking someone out. I know what I'm facing. Two things will be knocked out Dec. 3 - the system and Jermain Taylor.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Dante Florida: Did you underestimate Jermaine too much in your first fight? He seems to cocky, and I think he is forgetting how smart of a fighter that you are. I like you in the rematch.
Bernard Hopkins: I haven't underestimated anyone in my 18 plus years. It's not my style. I fought the fight and didn't get the decision. Taylor has been running his mouth recently. Come Dec. 3, he's going to be back to his humble self down in Arkansas with the Razorbacks.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Justin (Cleveland, Ohio): Hey Bernard, i am a jermaine taylor fan but i respect you as a champ and the way you carry yourself but what makes you think you can knock him out i saw the first fight and didn't look like he was hurt that bad, more tired your thoughts?
Bernard Hopkins: I'll punch him a little harder and execute certain parts of the round. He can be knocked out, anyone can. I can hurt Taylor any time I want to, I just didn't finish him. I'm guilty of not executing my ring name and finishing him. I know and Taylor knows he never hurt me, but I hurt him a few times.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Don (LA): Hey X man! What is the biggest problem in boxing that needs fixed? Good luck Sat...although you won't need it.
Bernard Hopkins: Regulation. National. One commission with a board.
Bernard Hopkins: Definitely you need to have referees and judges that are highly educated, especially "super fights" that most non-boxing fans tune in, whether it's me or someone else, and don't see the right outcome, which changes what the regular fan thinks about boxing.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------- John/Colorado Springs, CO: After a slow start in the 1st fight, what can I expect to see as soon as the bell rings in round 1 in the 2nd fight? Will you use the same approach and counterpunch his jab or take it to Taylor?
Bernard Hopkins: I will use the same approach but more of the counter punching, more of making Taylor swing and miss and then I'll execute. The plan will be the same, but only executing better.
Bernard Hopkins: Got to get rid of him. There's no way this can go 12 rounds. The odds aren't against the older guy, they're against the younger guy.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Mat (Regina Canada): Other than yourself, who do you think the most exciting fighter in the world is, and why???
Bernard Hopkins: Right now? Floyd Mayweather.
Bernard Hopkins: Zab Judah.
Bernard Hopkins: Thanks for the questions. " |

I still don't get his beef. Did he have Taylor hurt more in the first fight, yes, by all means he did. Did he win the fight? Not a chance. Hopkins has been around the sport long enough to know how it works. You don't get extra points for winning a round more convincingly (barring knockdowns, decutions, or the rare 10-8 round where you just completely dominated but did not score a knockdown). He did nothing in the first 7 rounds of a 12 round fight. That left only 5 rounds for him to win and he was unable to take Taylor out. I'm not saying that he won't be able to do it this time, but it really diminishes the respect for him that was starting to emerge even from his critics when he does things like this. 11/30/2005 10:03:47 AM |
