so if i have two JL 10W0's with a JL 250/1 amp powering them, what kind of box would be reccomended for a buick centry? They're in a ported box right now but it is falling apart, and rattles like a mother fucker

damn that was mean...

10wO's sound great in a properly design/sealed(the corners and edges) ported box HOWEVER its gonna be a lot easier to slap together a sealed box that will sound good...

Are you sure it is the box rattling and not mechanical noise from damaged woofers?

yea, the speakers are fine, the box is literally rattling, like the plastic port holes rattle cuz they are loose

your amp is terrible for that, theres no way they are gonna sound any good because the amp is way to weak

I like the sound of Sealed boxes better than ported/bandpass (especially bandpass).

So figure out the ideal internal volume and get crackin'

I second that: 125w to each 10w0 is a recipe for success... (I'm not a die hard JL fanboy by anymeans, but they do have their shit together and straight)

man, statements like that I understand what State409c has gone off the deepend on flaming people nowadays...

Well, I notice it in the car audio world more than anywhere else, that people somehow just get misinformed and have no problems whatsoever distributing advice like it is gospel.

It really blows my mind and I don't know where it comes from. I have been cruising mp3car again lately because I am going to do a car machine again, and there is a guy over there that competes in SQ in IASCA and most of what I have read him posting he knows his stuff. But then he was talking about 2V out from a source wasn't enough and that running it through a line driver to get it up to 4V was going to be a huge step up.

Some other guy beat me to the punch about "that's what gains are for" but the guy was still adamant that 2V was just unacceptable.

Of course some of it stems from people just not knowing what good sound quality sounds like. To them, it sounds great, and they have no problems making recommendations as such. That's like drinking the shittiest beer possible, and even though you like it, you hawk it like it is some good stuff.

I just got tired a long long time ago being nice about people being misinformed. If it takes me being a dick so that they don't give bad advice to another person, I feel justified.

I have 2 JL audio 12W3V2's and I put them in a custom built sealed enclosure that I built for my car. The ported boxes do seem to be louder, but then cannot hold up to very fast bass as well as a sealed box. Also, as you have noticed, ported boxes could be more complicated. I wanted a custom box, and to make ports in your own box, you have to get everything right (like size and location) for it to really sound nice.

thats what vented designs are for... they make a ported box ALMOST as easy to build as a sealed... JL has the formula on their website for tuning a vent... I have a spreadsheet that implements it and I get really good results from it.

well an ECE background kinda helps in understanding what will matter when talking about voltages... average joe has no clue how an amplifier works...

dang, last night i looked at this thread and swore it said 12W0....if its 10's then yea 125 to each isnt bad at all because JL seems to put out what it says it does most of the time

if it was a 12 it would be a totally different story

anyone up here got the facilities to help me build a box for my MR2 and my 12 rockford He2, i just need some equipment and maybe some help with specs...could make a day of it.

125 to two Dub 0's wouldnt have close to enough power to really get the full use out of those subs, granted a good box set up correctly does alot for a sub, power does alot as well and i just dont see 125 to each being enough, not nearly enough...and i've been around the industry with some of the best and hardest hitting in the business.

dude, the w0 10's and 12's have the same magnet and motor structure, the only reason the 12's would sound better with marginally more power is because they have more moving mass...

I hit ~139dB at a registered IASCA event (6years ago... damn I'm getting old...) with 2 12w0's on 100w each in a prefabbed box... I don't feel like breaking down the exact technical reasons why you don't need more power (I'm building a box for my truck right now )

they're actually W3's... after i took them outta the old box and put them in the new one, i found out. but i got a new box and put them in my friends car (i dont have the wiring in mine right now... im waiting until christmas break to wire it up) and turned it up, and oh my god, i didnt know they could sound so good! The box made a HUUUGE difference.

After further looking at the old box i found out that it rattled because it wasnt sealed on the edges, of the bottom, so im guessing the subs rattled the box apart, haha. but yea, my friend had some off brand 12's in his jeep and my JL10W3's his waaaaaay harder then his two 12's did off the same amp (which was way underpowered for the JL's)
