Just got this day before yesterday and im gonna go ahead and drop $1000 in shit for it.

I already ordered this......

http://www.crutchfield.com/S-EYX1hNiwj4L/cgi-bin/ProdView.asp?g=168550&I=140T1780DV

I know all you audio enthusiasts are laughing at me for ordering a Sanyo headunit/dvd player. None of the Alpine ones fit and quite frankly I cant justify spending over $1000 dollars on a headunit. I figure a touch-screen in dash DVD player for 650< was a good deal.

Im gonna use a Y cable to connect the iPOD to it because Sanyo does not offer a iPOD interface. I don't really care about the controls being integrated in to the head unit anyway its just as easy to control the ipod by picking it up out of the console.

The next thing im contemplating is one of these.

What else would you guys do to this thing??

I like the Discoveries. Be warned they are quirky though. This place has alot of good info.http://www.discoweb.org/. I dont think too many people in here care for them though. I assume this is going to be a street truck. Be careful installing all of your audio stuff. Rovers arent known for there electrical systems. What is the mileage on it? Somewhere around 60-80k be prepared to do a valve job.(Big money) If it were me I would take it to Rover Clubhouse in Durham for an inspection ($140 If I recall). before you spend all your loot on Bling. Sharp truck, good luck with it.

65,000 miles. It's going to be a daily driver probably up until 100,000 at which point I will sell it or if I have it paid off by then keep it for four wheeling. (I have a rule against using the car I drive to work to go four wheeling)

I have been reading up on installing AM stereo equipment in these things and apparently it is a huge pain in the ass. The factory headunit sounds awesome and honestly I would not have messed with it but the CD changer was missing out of it when I bought it and you can't order the changers for Diso 1s anymore. (already checked ebay)

It seems many of the people on the forums who have swapped headunits have re-wired all the speakers and lost use of the factory sub. I have not had a chance to pop the radio out yet but wil tonight. From what everyone is saying you have to use one of these. http://www.crutchfield.com/S-EYX1hNiwj4L/cgi-bin/prodview.asp?i=127OEM2 to avoid re-wiring the whole system.

I am glad to know the name of a good rover mechanic as well. Thanks for the info.

There are several Rover recyclers on the disco web. Im sure one of them has a CD player for you. And rember you MUST use 93 or better gas or youll be doing that valve job earlier than expected. Just curious, where did you buy it and how much did you pay? Too bad I talked myself out of getting one a few weeks ago.

filled with high performance modifications that will really improve handling, traction, clearance, and power for that tough mall parking lot terrain. sorry, couldn't help it. Glad you have the money to buy a Rover and put TV's and brush gaurds on it. Just please for the love of all that is good don't put a frickin' roof rack on it. PLEASE don't end up looking like this coad bucket:

Neil Ward's Blvd Auto Sales on Capital - it was $8500

They had a Range Rover up there and probably 5 other discoverys. This one had the lowest miles and was oldest. I was kind of in a hurry to buy something since my explorer crapped.

i'm glad you've decided to make your disco an urban assult vehicle

i used to make fun of Land rovers all of the time till i took the land rover off road driving school and lemme tell you those things can fucking wheel especially for having 20"s.

i got to drive a black supercharged range rover sport and if i could afford one i'd buy it in a heartbeat..
drives like a car 4 wheels like a jeep w/ 32" mud terrains and lockers.

your best deicision with that 1000 dollars would have been to spend it on another beater cause that hunk of shit will always be in the shop. what a waste of 8500 bucks, that other 1k on dvd player is a really close second. are you black? why the fuck does your yuppie mobile need a dvd? for in traffic? to impress the girls you take home that are already full of ghb from your frat party? please god give one good reason.

I sell townhouses and spend 90% of my day doing nothing but waiting for people to come in. On weekends I usually sit in my car instead of the model because I can see where the customers are better from there. During the winter its not very busy and the DVD player will give me something to do to pass the time.

The speakers are all grounded to the frame/body on the factory stereo setup instead of having two wires. This makes any aftermarket installation a total pain in the ass. From what I have read on the forums most people who have changed headunits just run all new wire to all of the speakers because the common ground system will hum if you don't. Right now it has the acessory on it that is supposed to eliminate the ground loop noise and it almost does the job but does not completely eliminate the hum. I will probably end up rewiring the speakers but I am still trying to figure out exactly how the factory sub is wired in to the thing.

This is why there are a fucking million Land Rovers in the used market for dirt cheap.

NEVER buy a Land Rover unless it's fully covered under warranty. It will spend at least half the time you own it in the shop.

That said, those are fucking helacious trail vehicles (disco II is a little better, and the Defender 90's are the hot shit). Funny thing they can take all kinds of shit on the trail but can't last a fucking week in the city.

I didn't say they had less problems, I said they were more capable for trail riding.

They ALL have serious long-term maintenance issues.

Its a 97 with 65,000 miles on it.

It's got a bad coil. Its not a complex repair I could do it here but the dealership is going to pay for it (out of warranty) so I had to take it to their mechanic. For some reason they still dont have the part in.

So here is the status on the repair. I do not speeaka de espanol so it was hard to figure out WTF he was saying but I know now why its still up there.

At first he told me that the coil that was sent to him was bad. I was like "ok so are you getting another one" he was like (in de espanol) "i cant find another one" so I'm like "what do you mean you cant find another one???" then he finally explains that the dealer was going to pay for the repair if they got a used coil and installed it. So I was like how much is a new one if i just went to Land Rover got one and brought it up there. ITS SIX HUNDRED FUCKING DOLLARS. When it burnt out on my wrangler the replacement was like $50 bucks. I am going to call around and see what I can find one for today, but so far I have owned this thing for a month exactly and have only been able to drive it about a week and a half.

I see why there is no love for the rovers.

Thay are "special" They reguire ALOT of maintence, It will never be as reliable as your old Jeep and thats probally not saying much. I found the coil @ Advance auto 1 day shipping about $100 http://www.partsamerica.com/ProductDetail.aspx?mfrcode=GPS&mfrpartnumber=245109&parttype=190&ptset=A.........Take your Rover to http://www.roverclubhouse.com/ In Durham SPEND $140 on a Pre purchase Inspection . They will give you a list of all that is wrong with it. Take the list to you dealer and tell them that these items need to be adressed. Push to get them fixed by A Rover specalist not some hole in the wall dump of a shop loaded with illegals. If they wont fix it try to get them to buy it back. Either way you will know what your up against. Good luck. Dave

I dont think thats the same part. I think this is what it is. http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/LAND-ROVER-DISCOVERY-COIL-PACK-DISTRIBUTOR-USED-PART_W0QQitemZ7962061768QQcategoryZ6763QQssPageNameZWD1VQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem

One side of the coil pack is going bad so it intermittently loses 4 cylinders. It started the second week I was driving it and progressively got worse. Land rover clubhouse has this part for 524. I called carquest and they can get only get it from land rover for 610.

Auto Zone has a shitty Wells brand for 79.99, They pull the same P/N for the listing of coil or coil pack. I think that the pic of the Advance Auto one is just a generic "coil" pic. The one on E-bay is someone trying to get rich selling used OEM parts. The original one only lasted 65k. Do you really want another OEM one?
