ok, i need a 2nd opinion, so i come home from work and the pc is shut off, i go to turn it on and nothing happens, no lights, no sounds...

i try a different power cord, i tried a different outlet, i swapped out the power supply with one that's known to work. both power supplies seem to make a clicking sound when plugged in, and the computer does nothing still. seems like the only other alternative is the motherboard... any other thoughts/ideas or suggestions?

Try shorting the little 5v power pins on the mobo in case the switch is shot, otherwise trash it.

you either have 2 dead power supplies or 1 dead motherboard

come to think of it i'm guessing they'll notice i removed the fan and replaced it with an aftermarket heatsink... so i'll have to remove it and put the fan back on... has anyone tried to RMA a motherboard like that?

Probably depends on the company, but I would imagine paying someone to inspect every board would be more expensive than just replacing the claimed failed boards.

ok, tested the PSU's again on a known working motherboard, the one in the system comes up dead, while the 2nd PSU one works (as expected)... so i tried the 2nd PSU that i know works on the motherboard, and sure enough it doesn't start up.

so is it possible to have the motherboard and PSU short out at the same time? all this was behind a UPS which means something inside must have shorted out causing the other device to short (i'm thinking maybe a loose mobo mounting screw?)... needless to say i'm getting new parts and RMA'ing the psu & mobo.

If the psu went while the system was running, I would imagine the chances of it taking other components with it are fairly high.

Did you have a decent one to begin with? No point to skimp a couple of bucks on it.

it was a rosewill 450-s w/ 120mm cooling fan, adjustable fan speed, and good amps on all the voltages, high quality cables, it had gotten good reviews in the past so i'd say it's average. i know it's not top of the line but i wouldn't consider it cheap either.
