I recently installed linux and configured my system to dual boot with the existing windows xp....it has been working fine for the past few days but i just reset my computer from linux into xp and I got a blue screen 'unmountable boot volume' error. I have tried to load the recovery console and try a fixmbr but recovery console does not even recognize my drive. Linux still works fine and see's all of my partitions as they should be.

Any ideas on how to fix this...?

I got that error and the only way to fix it that I know of is to reinstall Windows. Others might know of other ways, but that's the only way I know of. Sorry.

It's odd cause the only paritition that seems to be messed up is my xp ntfs boot partition. Linux wont mount it, but it will mount my other ntfs partition. I might see if one of these 'partition doctor' programs help....can't hurt.

Can you create a bootable floppy with your drive maker's drive utilities on it and manage your partitions from within?

I actually just had an issue where I couldn't boot from CD (went to black screen). Interestingly enough, I downloaded the XP boot disk image from Microsoft and created a set of XP setup floppies. I was actually able to boot from floppy, enter recovery console and repair my NTFS partition. Thank God I didn't have to do a clean install. Three times in a month is bullshit.

I don't know if I had some sort of hardware conflict issue or driver issue or what. My hard drive is SATA...

I finally got the windows cd to recognize my drive by playing around with some of the hard drive bios settings. I guess the xp boot disk just has a hard time with SATA drives.
