it's not much of a thread right now, but i just thought it was cool to see them talking about it. it's on scout.com so i'll just quote: http://mb27.scout.com/fsteelersfrm51.showMessage?topicID=20.topic
Quote : | " DE Mario Williams Definitely a DE in the 3-4. Listed at 6-7, 285 -- should have no problem bulking up into the 290's. Is this the guy? Would the Steelers use a 1st on an end?" |
Quote : | "I don't think he'll make it to our spot unless he completly tanks it at the combine and workouts. Helluva a player though, for sure. Love to have him." |
Quote : | " He's a monster, both of them are. him and manny lawson are freaks of nature. I would love to see him in the Black and Gold" |
Quote : | "We won't be able to get Mario, but Lawson could drop to us, but I hope it's in the 2nd, I REALLY, REALLY want LenDale White, we just DO NOT have a RB that we can rely on, I have to say that's priority #1 this offseason, get a YOUNG RB that will be able to stay for a while, not a stopgap, washed up, injury prone guy like Staley is. Pass Rusher is #1A in my book, not far behind RB, AT ALL!!!!" |
it would be so fucking cool to see one of them go to the steelers.12/9/2005 6:19:40 AM |

That'd be awesome, but I doubt the Steelers end up with a 1st round pick high enough to get Mario.
Manny, possibly, like you said. 12/9/2005 7:18:04 AM |

^yeah i definitely agree with that. i have no illusions of mario going to pittsburgh. he's gone after 5, 10 at the most i'd say.
i think manny is late 1st round, early-mid 2nd round pick. depending on how the steelers finish out, they'll be picking mid-to-late. if they miss the playoffs they could probably get manny in the 2nd, but if they pick up their game and make a deep playoff run, they may have to use their 1st rounder on him if they want him. the good thing is cowher is an alum, so you know he knows about them both. 12/9/2005 7:20:55 AM |

hopefully Colmer is trying to talk them into coming to Tampa Bay
we could use Mario on the other end with Simeon, and move Manny to LB with Brooks and Quarles 12/9/2005 7:27:25 AM |

manny as an OLB has already been tried and didn't work. maybe because of better coaching it could, but his instincts look like he's better at rushing the passer. you would need to put him in a 3-4 as a rush OLB if anything.12/9/2005 8:23:28 AM |

^Thats why Manny would be a good fit in Tampa
FWIW Mario will be a star in any defense, he is a bigger version of Peppers 12/9/2005 8:37:55 AM |

Id like to think mario isnt stupid enough to smoke weed right now.
that killed Warren Sapp's draft stock and he needs to impress during the bowl game anyway.12/9/2005 9:37:13 AM |

you mean hopefully Colmer is trying to talk Tampa Bay into drafting them? Unless they pull an Eli they don't get to pick where they go lol.12/9/2005 10:19:15 AM |

Mario can play the 3-4 but I think he'd be more effective/dominant as a 4-3 DE. Manny will be most effective initially as a 3-4 pass rush OLB or a 4-3 pass rush specialist DE, and could potentially develop into a Dwight Freeney type. 12/9/2005 10:24:04 AM |

Manny still might make it as a DE. Someone on ESPN said that he showed that he could gain weight last off season...I dont know how much he gained...but if he could continue to do that, he would still make a good NFL DE. 12/9/2005 10:40:55 AM |

In a 4-3 Manny certainly could be a DE in many schemes, like the one the Panthers used in the Seifret era, in which OLB's were used as DE's (Kevin Greene). In a 3-4, he would have to be an OLB though. 12/9/2005 10:52:42 AM |

^I agree, especially since you are now seeing smaller DE's in 4-3 systems. 12/9/2005 10:52:48 AM |

It will be a tough task to be better than Peppers. However, Mario has as much size and athleticism, and better technique than Peppers had at this point in his development. If Mario can develop as much as Peppers did at the next level and stays healthy, he can be Pro Bowl each and every year. 12/9/2005 11:51:49 AM |
