I used to do sprint training in Asics. New Balance have always been good for longer distances. 12/12/2005 6:29:52 PM |

there is no BEST...it's whatever shoe fits your foot the best and provides sufficient dampening for you....
with that said, I always trained in Asics or New Balance shoes. 12/12/2005 6:45:32 PM |

go to the athlete's foot in cameron village. they'll analyze your stride and recommend a shoe based on how much you under/ over pronate. they also give 10% off to state students. i usually spend 80-90 bucks on shoes there, but its definitely worth it. 12/12/2005 7:27:05 PM |

HE'S RIGHT.
No matter what shoe I wear I end up having to get inserts for my arches. The only footwear I've found with enought built in arch support is for ballet dancers.
(I like New Balance otherwise.)12/12/2005 7:46:51 PM |

yeah, i had some Asic Gel Magic Racers a while back for road races...they were awesome.
Here's what I wore:

if youre looking for support then i would recommend Brooks Adrenaline GTS shoes. they are made to help the over pronation and are the only shoes i can wear to run in to avoid pain in the feet and lower back. 12/12/2005 10:29:59 PM |

absolutely right.
Go to a store that has staff who can analyze your stride and pronation, and select the right shoe based on said analyses.12/12/2005 10:35:09 PM |

the chain stores will typically just have some highschooler that really knows nothing about running/stride/shoe styles.
Go to inside out sports. http://www.insideoutsports.com . All of the people I trained with for my marathon (most of them were hardcore competitive runners/triathletes) swear by this store for shoes. They definitely have the most knowledgeable staff around.

as a triathlete, and a person that is sponsored by IOS, don't go there for shoes. 12/13/2005 11:03:44 AM |

If you can get a copy of this past Saturday's News and Observer, they have a 25% off coupon in it for Omega Sports that you can use on their shoes...I plan on picking up some Asics running shoes with it, but I thought I'd mention it to help you save a bit of $$$ 12/13/2005 11:32:57 AM |

As a triathlete of sorts myself, I also highly recommend Raleigh Running Outfitters, everybody from my running club gets their shoes there. But I do go to Inside-Out sports sometimes just because they have a treadmill there where you can try out shoes, if you are into the indoor track thing. Also if you do go there, pick up a copy of the complimentary Endurance magaize, they usually have good coupons for various shoe stores like the ones mentioned above. 12/13/2005 12:36:35 PM |

Recently switched to Brooks from New Balance and I couldn't be happier.
Athlete's Foot in Cameron Village has a great shoe selection and employees who know shoes/running.

FWIW, I have completely flat feet and have had problems with support and pain in all New Balance and some models of Saucony, but the Asics I have now are a dream. 12/13/2005 12:55:37 PM |

Good to know. I have never actually been there as I used to sell shoes and have been wearing the same model shoe (NB 1028) for years, but from everything I have heard from my training partners they liked their experience there.
I have also heard good things about Raleigh running outfitters. Just don't go to dick's, athlete's foot, etc. unless you know the shoe you want. They are worthless as far as real help in choosing goes.12/13/2005 1:32:18 PM |

^ Give Brooks a try too. Both my fiance and I had similar problems and liked the Brooks ever so slightly over the Asics but both can't wear NB anymore. Specifically the Brooks Beast.
