Definition of "Sport" from Wikipedia..."A sport consists of a physical activity or skill carried out with a recreational purpose: for competition, for self-enjoyment, to attain excellence, for the development of a skill, or some combination of these. A sport has physical activity, side by side competition, and a scoring system. The difference of purpose is what characterises sport, combined with the notion of individual (or team) skill or prowess."Is spelling a physical activity? I guess that if you are considering that the motions of your mouth and the nervous sweat as one spells complicated words is a physical activity, then "Yes."But everything else in this definiton matches with the purpose of the spelling bee perfectly...So, I say that it is a sport... (this really is no different than chess or poker when you really think about it)
