I'm interested in getting a Blackberry or other handheld like Treo, but I know next to nothing about them.

Can anyone recommend what device is the easiest to use for sending emails and ssh? Seems like doing much command-line work through ssh would be frustrating.

Definitely take a look at the Windows Mobile based cellphones, especially the HPs. You get a Windows OS, WiFi, Bluetooth, email, SSH, and a fine megapixel camera all in one package.

i wouldn't use a camera, and would like to get something that is small in size so it still feels like a phone. treo 650 looks nice, has anyone used one? do any of these things have wifi support as well for faster speeds when i'm near an open access point?

none of the blackberries or treos are what I would call sleek/small/convenient to carry.

FUCK THE Treo. Treos have some serious software problems and crash constantly. Although they "look good on paper" and seem to have a lot of nice features, the reality is that they are inhearantly flawed devices.

Blackberries are much more straightforward. The software is all Java-based and the applications are considerably more stable. I have never seen a Blackberry crash. Software synchronization to Outlook is flawless. Although there may be SSH software available, I have not used it.

I think that a Windows Mobile device would be more suitable for you since you want to use SSH and such. Blackberries are so great because they are very simple, straightforward and do what they do very well. If you want lots of extra features (and more complexity) then go with a Windows Mobile device. I would just recommend strongly against the Treo.

Oh, and fuck esgargs/ultra.

i love my treo, but you do have to get used to the crashes. there are ways to prevent them for the most part, most of which involves not installing every freeware palm os app. if you have a treo and don't install a shit ton of software, it handles fine

start filling it up with stuff, though, and it starts crashing. It's worth it to me, but it really is pathetic how much you have to tinker with it to be able to do what you're supposed to be able to do already.

it's also pathetic how many 3rd parties have to make software to do things that the treo should do stock.

they also cost too much. they are, however, sleek/small/convenient to carry. never had a problem with the size of mine. Now my flip-phone monster of a treo 300, that thing was ridiculous.

if you just want email, get a blackberry

^^ The crashing is what got to me.

When I am in a hurry and trying to get something and the son-of-a-bitch reboots (for the 18th time) it makes me want to pitch it into a wall.

I've had ONE software crash on my treo 600 and it was related to SMS.. picking the recipient of a SMS from within the SMS screen crashes it everytime.

I learned not to do that and its been fine ever since. I just have to SMS from the contact list or from the conversations menu.

I run all kinds of software all the time, verichat, snapper, ptunes, voiceit, and can honestly say that I've never had a lockup or a crash.

That being said, if you have verizon, and want a smartphone, get the Samsung i730, EV-DO is the heat.
