I tried to btt one of the old threads, but they are all too old.

Any updates now that it has been out for a while? I was about to get a Razr last week, but I was turned off by the fact that it had 0 bars in the store and the Motorola e815 right beside it had 4 bars. I do a lot of travelling around NC and don't really want a phone with piss poor reception. Will this be fixed by firmware, or is it just something the users will have to accept?

p.s. I'm with Verizon. They never have any Sony Ericsson phones.

the razr's were carried by gsm providers for the reason you just described - they only have good reception in a place where there's GREAT reception...razrs were made for looks, not performance

all that said, i'm basing my information on what i've heard from people who work for alltel (who just started carrying it) and cingular (who's carried it for a while)...something may have changed in the past few months, i don't know

best phone alltel carries (if you want a flip phone) is the nokia 6255i...i believe verizon carries the 6256 (pretty much the same thing)...the only problem is that it's not nearly as pretty as other options and it's a tad thicker...i love mine, though - great features and best reception of any phone i've seen to date

I just wanted the Razr because it is skinny, but I can't deal with bad reception.

my problem with the razr is how cheap and flimsy it feels and syncing motorolas always gave me problems

I agree. I have played around with my friends and it always feels like I am going to break it.

DO NOT get the v710...my girlfriend bought it, back when it still cost $250 with a two-year agreement (she wouldn't listen to me) and it's a piece...not to say the phone isn't decent, it is...awesome reception and you can listen to the mp3's on its speakerphone without ANY distortion, even at full volume...ringtones sound freaking awesome on it

BUT, the bluetooth is so crippled that it's practically useless (verizon had a lawsuit against them for it, and now you get your money back or something...alltel does the same thing, but they don't really lie to you about it like verizon did)...the camera SUCKS...i don't know what crap they put in it, but my nokia takes much better pictures, and there's an actual (if relatively useless) flash function (as well as movies) on the nokia...the transflash card that goes in the v710 is limited to 128mb (they should have a 256mb coming out early next year, but eh)...i got a 1gb mmc card off of ebay for $25...

the one thing i'll say for gsm is the features on their phones can't be beat...their service sucks, but if all you do is want it for hanging around large cities, then by all means, get gsm, get some awesome features, and never leave the city...cdma carriers have some catching up to do, but the nokia 6255i (6256) is the best phone you can get (imo)...did i mention the java games? alltel hides the link to them in the phone, but if anyone gets it and would like to know how to install/find/use them, i can help you out...reception-wise, it's BY FAR the best phone i've seen...the v710 is about equal in terms of reception

GSM is used everywhere. Cingular is the best way to go GSM. No issues across states in my personal experience.

I didn't realize alltel locked the bluetooth on the v710, do they do that with any others?

this is not true what so ever for the GSM models

i am EMPLOYED by a company that tests GSM phones

the Razr (Cingular - GSM only) is ranked 4th out of all the Cingular phones for RF (Tmobile's was 3rd)

I have no experience with Suncom's Razr at all but if it is anything like Cingular or Tmobile service, it will be one of the better models

however, im just going to tell you, there are new Razr's that will be available for 1st quarter of 2006 (for Cingular only) with megapixel cameras and itunes built in (SD mem cards). Verizon already has their version of this out.

some of you might want to hold out

[Edited on December 20, 2005 at 10:35 AM. Reason : Cingular also has 4-5 RAZR type models coming out next summer]
