I know that it is just assumed among everyone that Mario will go pro after this year because there is no reason for him to stay around but has he ever said anything either way.

Sorry if this is a repeated topic

There is no reason for him to stick around, except to get a degree and become a better player/dominate the ACC.

Rivers would have barely been a first round pick if he came out after his junior year. Mario is top 10 prolly right now so it might be different for him. He cannot go up much more.

I believe he will have his degree in May. When he was being recruited, he said he was gonna get his degree in 3 and only be at any school for 3.

But I don't believe he has said anything officially as of late.

When he was being recruited, he told all schools recruiting him that he'd enroll a semester early, graduate in 3.5 years, and turn pro after his junior season

He also said recently if he's the #1 DE taken he's going pro. Don't know if he will be, but if he's a first rounder (Which he easily is), he'd be dumb not to go

Edit: Oops... what hondaguy said

^^ I dont think so, Kiwis stock fell this season and mario's at least stayed the same. Mario will go before him. and likely first round, if he fell to the second it would be one of the biggest steals that any team would get. If hes not a first rounder i will run around campus butt naked chanting go heels.

It's about 95% likely that Mario is going pro.

And with that said, you better enjoy the "bowl game" this year, because we won't be attending one next year.

theres no way we will be any worse next year, you really think that a DE has that much effect on a team. I love Mario but its not like were losing a QB

2 things

1. you guys keep saying probable first round, shit he will top 15

2. i definetily see us being worse next year, our defense will be equal to our offense meaning they will both be sucky

Ehe, yes

See Rivers' senior season. Everyone was predicting Orange Bowl and some great season. We returned the entire secondary, experienced LB's, but lost our entire defensive line from the #1 D in the ACC and 17th in the nation during our Gator Bowl year.

Me and very few on here said "Don't get ahead of yourself. We're gonna have no pass rush unless Mario williams is the real deal straight out of high school. We're experienced everywhere except where we need to be... the line"

We wound up with the #110 Pass defense in the nation that year.

I also remember saying "Our defense will be nasty when these freshmen getting PT get some experience." Well, we had the #1 D in the nation.

D-Line is the most important defensive position on the field. DT's and DE's both need to be experienced and talented or you're gonna give the QB waaay too much time and get run all over. A talented D-Line can make a weak secondary look awesome. A talented secondary means nothing if you can't stop the run and pressure the QB

We're gonna be hurting at the DE position. Green and Peterson really hurt... and we're gonna definetely suck ass if Brooks doesn't play

Mock draft I was lookin at today has Mario going with the 5th pick to the packers.
They said
Quote :
"A consistent pass rush would do wonders for the development of their young secondary and Mario Williams is the best defensive end in college football."

Course this same draft had Matt Leinart slipping to the 4th pick to the Saints so who knows.....

Willie Young has shown flashes, but he's still a little too thin and inexperienced to be an impact player next year, IMO.

If Brooks comes back, He and Littleton Wright will probably be starting as of now.

We're gonna suck next year and every year after that until we can get some consistent o-line play.

Not having a pass-rush is gonna hurt pretty bad as well. Amato's defensive schemes are very reliant on speedy pass-rushing DE's. go ahead and brace for a long season next year.

Greg Peterson

http://scout.scout.com/a.z?s=178&p=8&c=1&nid=1233721

I believe he was 4* at one point, but for some reason Scout always drops players that dont qualify. We really really really loved both of them and brought them in together. He had quite a few offers, and I know he and Green were supposed to be the heir apparents to Mario and Manny.
neither will ever make it, unfortunately

I don't believe that our D-line will be that bad, granted we are losing the best pair of Defensive ends to play together in a long time, but we have Pressely, McCargo, and Tank Tyler all coming back on the inside. Our Linebackers and Safetys will be pretty good. Corners? Never can tell.

With the inside of our line being as strong as it is look for the ends to do okay because they will not be the main focus of the line.

It is true that the ends won't receive all of the attention, which is great.... but it also means we'll have no pass rush. McCargo, Pressley, and Tank are more run stuffers. Pressley will probably be our best Pass rusher next year, and that's not a good thing.

I'm just worried about teams running to the outside and overloading the smaller DE (Like UNC does every year to Manny). Not many people realize how well Mario shut down an entire side of the field. Manny held his own, but Mario was unbelievable.

I'm just worried if we start inexperienced guys, they're just going to run side to side on us all day long. (And then throw it over the top becuase there's no pass rush)

If anything, we will be better against the run next year, because those guys should be better at filling the gaps. Manny & Mario are great & all, but they are not in there for run stopping. Some teams were able to take advantage of our smaller, quick line last year & run it up our throats. That should be less of a problem next year. Teams running to the outside shouldn't be a big problem either, because our LB's are pretty solid & quick.

Where we will hurt is in the pash rush, but we will just use more LB blitzes than we had to this year.

^I seriously doubt we'll be bigger than Mario at DE. It's questionable whether our second DE will be bigger than Manny. Our DTs should be the same guys. I don't see where this bigger, more physical D-Line idea comes from, unless you think we are just going to put D Tackles at End, which is also very doubtful on a Chuck Amato defense.

^I actually was suggesting that we would move one of our DT's to DE. I think you play the best guys you have & our DT's are all too good not to play. I know that wouldn't be a typical Amato defense, but that doesn't mean it's not possible. I think it would work well as a kind of hybrid 3-4 type defense.

Mario is. He was the best run stopping DE in the country, IMO. He wasn't really known for his pass rushing abilities.... he's an excellent run stopper, double teamed or not.

And like you mentioned... a lot of talk has been circling about having our starting lineup as follows for next year

SDE: Brooks (If he returns)
DT: Tank
DT: McCargo
WDE: Pressley

Problem is, we'd have no depth anywhere on our line

^Mario was a very good run stopper when the offense runs wide, because he could chase most anyone down, but stopping the run up the middle was not his strength, IMO. Many times the tackle would just push him outside & they'd run right by him though.

I know we wouldn't have much depth there, but we're not going to be deep anyway you look at it.
