Yeah retail sucks. But I think it would be better then working in the food industry. You probably could get paid more in the food industry, but I just wouldn't be able to put up with people.

Stick with it. After a while you become numb to it. You will reach a point when all you hear is key words like "return", "receipt", "manager", "rebate" and the rest of their horseshit does not even hit your brain. Then it will get so bad when your gf or mother is talking all you do is pull out key words and ignore the rest, once you reach this point the job will take a minor toll on your relationships but you will get by.

Then the store you work at will hire some shithead manager from up north that is six months older than you to come in and make your life so miserable that one day you just say fuck it and quit. Then two weeks after you quit that manger will get fired or demoted because he is running off all of the veteran employees and the staff is rebelling by doing everything way shittier to make him look bad. He can't blame it on the whole staff so they will nix him in an effort to solve the problem.

The best recommendation I can give you is to have another job lined up before you reach that point. A career job if you can, so six months after you quit you can walk in head held high and tell everyone you used to work with with how much better you are enjoying life after that job.

listened to sports radio all day everyday
get good excercise running to doors with the 90% light boxes
delivered to karmonos-holt-washington(steeler)-brindamor-johnson(lexus dude) tons of other rich pple.
got a total of 40 bux tips

Retail taught me a couple of things (and mind you, this it just IMHO):

1) Retail can be a lot of fun if you get to know your coworkers. You pull some several consecutive double-digt hour shifts with people, you can gain a lot of respect working with them. I think I met and learned a little something unique about 150+ people when I worked retail.

2) Only about 10% of retail employees are truly knowlegable about their job ... this includes management.

3) 90% of the time, it is the customer who is slow, not the cashier. OR, the customer doesn't do
enough to help speed things along for the cashier.

4) Management positions are extremely political. Not always the case the best person for the job gets it. Not always the case the person that gets the position should even be in a position to manage people.

5) It is a lot easier to lead people than it is to manage them. Doesn't matter how incompetent or slack a person is ... it is possible to make them want to work and be productive.

i worked at cvs for 3 years, its not really all that bad. i got to know the people that i worked with well, and also most of the customers.

^I have found that it is a lot better to work in a small store like that rather then a big one. I used to work part-time at Eckerd when I was in high school and I got to know the other employees pretty well. The management was pretty cool and they actually listened to me when I needed to talk to them about something. I also worked for Best Buy a little and it was pretty much the exact opposite. There were tons of employees (and new employees like every week) and even if I submitted a time off request months ahead of when I was required to, I still never heard back about it. Even when I was like "So what is the deal with my time off request" they were like "Huh? I didn't get one..."

I wouldn't say dealing with customers is mentally draining; I actaully feel a lot smarter after I deal with some of the seemingly educated people that I deal with whom have no common sense whatsoever. Like the one person said, after years of doing it, you become numb to it. Dealing with people does give you a different perspective on human behavior, as you realize how idiotic some people can be. Dealing with customers is always tricky as well. You can go out of your way to give the best service and be the most polite to someone, and they'll complain on you that you didn't do X, Y, or Z for them, and you can be just as non-chalant and uncaring, and you'll get a compliment for giving great service.

I've worked retail for a year. The only thing draining about it is the boredom in standing around for hours with nothing to do.

The christmas rush is quite fun.
