if you liked ringu...watch audition...

there are painful parts in that movie...

exorcism of emily rose and high tension aren't bad for modern horror movies...

the old night of the living dead movies are good too..."braaaains" (but not that scary)

halloween obviously...

i'd go in this order of the ones i mentioned (for rentals or whatever)

1. Audition
2. High Tension
3. Exorcism of Emily Rose
4. Halloween
5. Night of the Living Dead

hopefully some of the movie buffs will add to it, but there are a lot of threads about this probably

Exorcism of Emily Rose is really scary, Dead Birds is really good and scary.

Funny Games is up there, along with The Shining.

Audition was good, painful to watch, but good. Very creepy.

audition was boring up until the girl goes apeshit and cuts the guy's foot off, so just fastforward it until the end

so completely not scary.

for what they were, Audition and High Tension were pretty cool flicks. High Tension was better than Audition, though.

---BEWARE, FILM STUDIES MAJOR ELITIST VERBAL DIARRHEA BELOW---

You people and your neo-horror shit films. You need to see some real horror movies, not just the "omg it's a scary little ghost girl who jumped out at me" schlock.

Night of the Living Dead (original)
Henry, Portrait of a Serial Killer
The Devil's Rejects
The Last House on the Left
The Texas Chainsaw Massacre (original)
Cannibal Holocaust
Men Behind the Sun

and finally, and most importantly,

Funny Games

Just remember, there's a difference between being "scared" and being "horrified."

"Every theater showing this film should be contractually obligated to smell bad. It's a toxic little picture -- and also something of a masterpiece. See you in Hell."
-- Sean Burns, PHILADELPHIA WEEKLY

“The Devil’s Rejects” will repel many but will thrill the fans and the daring. I think Rob Zombie has an instant horror classic on his hands."
-- Robin Clifford, REELING REVIEWS

"A gloriously wicked psychobilly thriller that unfolds like a crystal meth soaked drive-in movie nightmare."
-- Spence D., IGN FILMFORCE

"Fans of 70's exploitation horror get ready to get jazzed - "The Devil's Rejects" is the real deal - a gritty, nasty, stylish piece of work "
-- Laura Clifford, REELING REVIEWS

"It is grim, unrelenting and savage, and it is destined to become a genre classic. After seeing this one, you won't just lock your doors, you'll nail planks over your windows."
-- Colin Covert, MINNEAPOLIS STAR TRIBUNE

Have you even seen the film? Oh and Roger Ebert gave it 3 out of 4 stars.

Yeah that is true, I saw you had Cannibal Holocaust on your list there and I was gonna say that it wasn't really that scary, but it was quite horrific. Same with Funny Games... you can't really get in the scared mood when the main guy grabs a TV remote in the house, talks to the camera for a second, then rewinds the film. I found them pretty interesting though.

Aegri Somnia said Dead Birds earlier on. I watched this film a few months ago (actually after reading one of those horror film threads) and didn't really find it that scary (or horrific). One of my favourite horror movies of all time is An American Werewolf in London, I used to watch it all the time.

yes, unfortunately, i had to prescreen it to make sure it was put together right. A horror movie? hardly, i was laughing at the horrible acting and shitty effects, dialogue the whole fucking time. if anybody was horrified or scared by it then i'm sure the evil kitten in the parking lot must have caused them a fucking heart attack

and for every good quote you took off rottentomatoes, there was an equally bad one.

Heh, scariest of all time....hmm

I remember Alien keeping me up at night when I was little.

Troll scared teh bejezzus out of me too.

Hight Tension comes to mind as a recent movie that scared me.

Audition and Cannibal Holocaust were more disturbing/make you want to throw up, rather than scary; I got the same feeling when I watched The Fly remake.

The Exorcist creeped me out as a kid.

The Shining and Jaws were scary to me at one point too.

Not too much scares me any more, I am more into cheesy horror and gore now more than anything.

I just watched the movie Lifeforce again after a long time and the bat people/spaceship scene was a lot scarier/well done in the same sense as Alien was scary.

Also 2nd the mention of Even Horizon as a scary movie, in the same way Hellraiser was scary.

“The Devil’s Rejects”

worst movie I have EVER seen. Not scary, not funny, not entertaining. But Hell, I guess that follows suit with all other Rob Zombie films, that fucker should just die already.

I agree with Texas Chainsaw Massacre...I love that movie...

Devil's Rejects sucked...

Henry, Portrait of a Serial Killer sucked...it was just the first "biography" killer movie...the special features were great though...

I think Rob Zombie's movies have a lot of potential and succeed in the horror category better than 80% of the dumb crap that tries to pass for horror these days. I hate all of this gritty/scratched, artificial junk that has been popular as of late with movies like: The Ring, The Grudge, Boogeyman, Amnityville Horror, and ect....I think it all started with Blair Witch and 13 Ghosts(one of the first releases I can remeber under Lions Gate after their logo modification).

I do blame a lot on the crack down on movie ratings in the last 15 years. I seem to remember watching horror movies from the early 80's/late 70's rated PG containing cursing/nudity/gore/drug use. It's difficult to make anything shocking these days with an 'R' rating much less a 'PG-13'.

i was under the impression that the ratings seemed a bit looser lately. can get away with a lot more nudity and language, but maybe im wrong. any proof on that?

^^House did suck.

But as I mentioned in the post, I wasn't talking about "scare" factor in movies. I wasn't "scared" at all when I was watching TDR. But "horror" is a totally different ballgame. There's a certain feeling of dread and hopelessness you get when watching horror films. In TDR, the main characters were really charismatic, you felt for their plight almost, they were "cool." But, then you saw them torturing, raping, skinning people alive, and you had to deal with the fact that earlier you had placed your alignments with these same people. That's a horrifying feeling.

only the original Candyman too - for some reason he wasn't as scary in the 2 & 3 ones - i guess having it set in the projects for some odd reason, made it scarier for me

The filmmakers of Candyman had to get permission from local gangs to shoot the film in their territories. That is kinda cool.

Except for The Shining, I haven't seen any other classic horror films.

Among, the neo-horror movies (and compared to The Shining as well), I would say The Blair Witch Project was BY FAR the scariest... I mean, I was genuinely scared when I was walking back across campus at 1 am to go back to my dorm (I watched in the library during some term holidays, and the campus was deserted).

It has to do with having an imagination. I have a very fantastic non-stop crazy imaginative ability, far more visual than anybody else's that I know of.

When you can't see the "ghost" for the entire movie, that's far scarier than ANY "ghost" that is shown in the movie.

Furthermore, not only was the "ghost" not shown, but also what it did to the humans was not shown. That definitely multiplied the effect.

And also, a movie that you can relate to in a very pedestrian manner, or one in which you can pretend to be in the shoes of the main actors DURING the movie, is scarier than a mega-budget sci-fi thing which is obviously fake.
