the o-line coach is regarded as one of the best in the country. he's been there 25 years, so i would bet he'll be in high demand shortly 1/2/2006 12:39:38 PM |

I would say not since Coker actually wins. See 2001 National Championship and 2002 runner-up.1/2/2006 2:15:05 PM |

i think wins with someone else's recruits is what he was going for, that and being a longtime assistant
and btw, gut went to 2 final fours in his 3 years as head coach

And recruited so terribly that he set back UNC's basketball program about 4 years and was the primary reason Doherty was fired1/2/2006 3:13:43 PM |

no the primary reason doherty was fired was because sean may broke his foot. had he stayed healthy, i guarantee that he would still be coach despite his temper and complaints. i still feel like doherty got a raw deal by the administration 1/2/2006 3:16:07 PM |

Well, we can both agree that Doh didn't walk into a great situation.
He had a young, talented team that didn't win enough becuase of injuries and inexperience. I've always said that Doherty could have won that national championship last year with that team.
Moral of the story is that Gutheridge coached alright.... but his recruiting was horrendous. Adam Boone and that Morrison guy were not UNC-calibre players 1/2/2006 3:36:23 PM |

doherty is not a good coach. to say he wouldve won a ntl championship is a smack in the face to one of the best coaches in the game. roy williams. he may have gotten a bum wrap but in the end unc got a much better coach than himm or billy 1/2/2006 3:42:13 PM |

I think Royboy is better than Doh, but I still think anyone could have won with that lineup.
That's not meant to be a smack at Roy. More like realizing the fact that Doh built that team and never got to take advantage of it. You can't coach 4 freshmen to the national championship (99% of the time, that is) 1/2/2006 3:45:08 PM |

yeah there's no doubt that roy is the superior coach right now, but i think with doherty's leadership classes and a low pressure situation at florida atlantic, he'll be back at a major school soon enough 1/2/2006 4:49:51 PM |

I'm amazed they fired Kehoe. He has been there FOREVER. 1/2/2006 5:38:20 PM |

I'm still curious to see whether Roy can meet expectations with his own recruits.
I think those guys last year benefitted heavily from being under Doherty--they had a halfcourt offense, something Roy's teams have traditionally struggled with (and are struggling with again this year).
I see it similarly to the way the Pistons took off this year--they learned great defensive play from Brown, and now they've taken up Saunders' offensive system on top of it. 1/2/2006 5:40:35 PM |

i'm not sure it was necessarily being groomed under doherty. in roy's system, experience is everything. when he took over, despite a lot of talent, they struggled to grasp everything. as juniors, felton, may, and mccants were much more polished, as the season goes on i think you'll see improvement in halfcourt sets. it also hurts that hansbrough is the only legitimate big man 1/2/2006 5:46:38 PM |

Yeah, I'm not saying they won't get better.
It's just something I was thinking about--a lot of times, a coach (in football or basketball) does much better in his first year or two than any of the following years. It usually gets blamed on a lack of recruiting ability, but I've been thinking that the experience under a different coach may provide an extra edge to that first group of players. 1/2/2006 5:50:50 PM |

agreed, Doherty was primarily fired for behind the scene issues, otherwise he would have gotten more of a chance then just three seasons
he also ran a team that reached number one halfway in to the season in to the ground, the chemistry was wrecked and they bowed out early in the tournament
maybe it was the player's faults (forte, capel) but Dohert def had serious issues relating to players1/2/2006 5:51:17 PM |

9-3 ain't gonna cut it in Miami.

Because he is HORRIBLE.
Did you watch the FSU game?
The UNC game was worse. Miami beat Carolina because Carolina sucks and blew it.1/3/2006 1:35:16 AM |

like fitch said...9-3 aint gonna cut it at the U....coker's still a great coach though afterall his first loss was against Ohio state in the national championship game on a fluke PI call...miami should have a pretty strong season next year with kyle wright settlin into the qb role 1/3/2006 3:54:42 PM |
