definitely nature vs. nurture at work in my house. my dad adopted me when i was 3, but i don't show the slightest resemblence to him personality wise. its all on my mom's side 1/7/2006 12:36:00 PM |

I could only hope to become as hardworking, honorable, selfless and successful as my father; loving, nuturing and caring as my mother.
So while I may not be fated to be like them, I can only hope I will turn out like them.

I'm very similar to my mom. If I become even more like her, I'd be perfectly happy. Except I don't want to be blind. But I'd like to respond to difficult situations in the same patient, gracious manner that she does. So far I haven't reached that state. 1/7/2006 9:12:27 PM |

i actually think that you are much more likely to become like your grandparents.
I believe that its a cyclical thing where the children vow to never be like their parents, who did the same thing with their parents.
Even if you had "good" parents, if have often seen in research that i have done (dont laugh, I'm serious) that people tend to have many of the personality traits and ideologies that thier grandparents have.....and most people dont even know it.
and i dont mean that you are the same now as your 75 year old grandfather is now, but the older you get, you will show many more characteristics of them than you probably will ever realize. Most times even moreso than your biological parents. 1/8/2006 12:48:08 AM |

My dad's a gynocologist, so the majority of his day is spent looking at poonnani.
I have yet to even see one poonnani. And, given my current state of being, it is unlikely I will ever see poonani.
Therefore, I am forced to conclude that I have not grown up to be my father (in that respect, anyway).

Well, I haven't had any children out of wedlock, I have a bachelor's degree, I don't foresee myself morphing from moderate liberal to hardcore, crazy-ass conservative, I'm not addicted to any drugs, and I can hold down a steady job. So, no, I'm pretty different from my parents. But that's not necessarily good. 1/8/2006 12:21:10 PM |

I think we use our parents' actions to rationalize our actions sometimes, especially when it comes to short-comings.
I don't think living now as compared to how my baby boomer parents lived at my age can hardly draw comparison... well, I guess it can in a very general sense, though.

how in the hell?
I'm a lot different from both of my parents. Nothing wrong with them, but I'm not at all like them in a lot of ways.
My mom--very nice...too nice, sometimes. Quite risk averse. Not very confrontational. Does look at things from different angles--puts herself in others shoes, and is capable of seeing grey areas (I got this from her), but does not get very well informed of some things she makes decisions about...really doesn't get all that immersed in much of anything in terms of hobbies or interests. I wouldn't describe her as a boring person, but she does lead kind of a boring life, in my opinion.
My dad--Hard driving, type-A personality, highschool class president, very sociable/outgoing businessman (that part I got from him, except that I'm much less high strung). Very confrontational--not really an asshole (anymore), but does not mind butting heads. He's more quick tempered than I am (I'm much more emotionally level). Big picture oriented--pragmatist (I'm also this way). However, sees everything very much in black and white terms--not good at seeing grey areas or looking at things from the other side. Not risk averse like my mom is, but he's more into golf than any of the high-octane hobbies I'm drawn to (although he does ride a motorcycle...although it's a Gold Wing).
and neither of my parents have ever been drunk or done any drugs or anything, and they didn't have sex until they were married (although i'm sure Mom has since they divorced).
