might be as simple as it sounds, but say a guy throws the ball off of his backboard and it goes all the way to the other side of the halfcourt line, if the at-the-time offensive team touches the ball, is it a backcourt violation? (thinking along the lines of having to hit the rim to avoid shot-clock violation)

well, if it hits the backboard hard enough to cross the half-court line, it probably didn't hit the rim, so the shot clock would probably expire in that situation. However, I would also think it would be a backcourt violation as long as nobody from the other team touched the ball.

if it touches the rim it is in no ones possession so the shooting team could get the ball in the back court without anyone else touching it. It's like when they inbound the ball the offensive team can throw it into the back court no matter where they are throwing it in from, and no matter if they had crossed mid court just prior to having to throw it in.

That situation is nearly impossible, you'd have to throw the crap out of it and have no one attempt to grab the ball.

i have no idea because that was never brought up when I was a ref and the rules book didn't have that as one of the "what if" scenarios

backcourt, no change of possession occured as well as no touching of the rim. thats like bouncin the ball off the backboard and it goes out of bounds, same thing.
